Canadians headed south of the border in droves in December, with the number of trips via car to the United States hitting record highs, according to Statistics Canada data released February 18.
Overnight travel to the U.S. via all modes of transportation increased by 5.8% to 2 million trips – the highest monthly number since StatsCan began keeping records in 1972.
December saw residents of Canada taking 1.2 million overnight trips via car to the U.S. – a jump of 100,000 trips or 8.7% compared with November and the highest figure in 20 years.
On the other hand, travel to Canada from the U.S. dipped in December. A 2.7% increase in overnight air travel to 318,000 trips was offset by a 2.5% drop in same-day car travel.
