The Conference Board of Canada is predicting a strong year for tourism across the country, and says an increase in business travel will buoy Vancouver’s tourism sector.

An improving global economy, lower loonie and increasing consumer confidence are contributing to the gains, says the Conference Board in its spring 2014 report on tourism.

Along with other major Canadian cities, Vancouver will benefit from more convention activity. Several major events scheduled to be hosted in Canada will also boost tourism, says the Conference Board. Domestic travel to the city will increase by 2.6% in 2014, while overseas arrivals will grow 4.6%.

In 2015, Vancouver will host the FIFA Women’s World Cup, an event that, in conjunction with a large dermatology convention, is expected to put pressure on the city’s supply of hotel rooms.
