Vancouver’s sustainable food scene trending among foodie tourists

A trip to Granville Island Public Market may seem old hat to the locals who’ve walked by all those ice-packed stands piled with prawns and salmon too many times before.

But Vancouver is actually among the trendiest cities for foodies to visit this fall, according to a report from Travelocity.

The online travel agency enlisted “culinary trendologist” Christine Couvelier to rank the world’s top cities for its first culinary travel trend report.

Vancouver cracked the top 10, placing No. 8 thanks to its focus on sustainable seafood menus.

“Watch for the Ocean Wise sign noted on Vancouver menus for the freshest, ‘sustainable seafood,’ and be sure to try the Pink Salmon caught off Haida Gwaii,” Couvelier said in the report.

“One of the pioneers of local seafood has just opened a great fish and chips shop, The Fish Counter, that must be on your list.”

Vancouver placed behind No. 4 Toronto, which made the list for its emerging hand-held pie trend that feature varieties ranging from butter chicken to sour cherry.

West Coast neighbour, Seattle, also beat out Vancouver.

Placing No. 6 on the list, Seattle got the nod due to the salted caramels proliferating around the city.

The No. 1 city on the list is San Francisco, which is trending with its sriracha offerings at restaurants. Instead of just using the spicy sauce in Vietnamese pho, dining establishments in the northern California city are using it as glaze for anything from caramels to chicken.

According to an Angus Reid poll released in August, 75% of Canadians believe food is an important factor when choosing a city to visit.

The poll surveyed 1,505 Canadian residents and is within a margin of error or plus-or-minus 2.52%, 19 times out of 20.
