Victoria tourism numbers down

Occupancy rates and room rates at Victoria hotels were below last year’s rates both in July and in the first seven months of 2012.

Chemistry Consulting Group statistics showed that the average room occupancy in Victoria in July was 78.27%, down from 80.54% in the same month last year.

Occupancy was also down to 62.48% in the first seven months of 2012. In the first seven months of 2011, Victoria hotels enjoyed a 63.89% occupancy rate.

The lower occupancy has also come as hoteliers lower rates. The average room rate was $145 in July, according to the Chemistry Consulting Group. That compares with $148.18 in July 2011.

Average hotel room rates in Victoria in the first seven months of 2012 were $117.80, compared with $120.27 in the same period in 2011.

Those two variables combined to push revenue-per-room-night (revpar), which is a key metric in the industry, to $113.49 in July compared with $119.51 in July 2011. Revpar in the first seven months of 2012 was $73.60, compared with $76.84 in the same period in 2011.
