Nearly four in five Canadian chief financial officers say their employees are at least somewhat aware of their organizations’ key strategic objectives, according to the results of a Robert Half survey released August 14.

The poll found that 79% of CFOs feel their employees know their employers’ visions and goals, with 20% responding that their teams were “very aware.”

“Communicating business goals is an important step in the right direction toward engaging and motivating employees, but just helping people become aware of those goals isn’t enough,” said David King, Canadian president of Robert Half Management Resources.

“Managers need to empower workers and show them how their individual contributions support the efforts to reach the organization's objectives.”

The CFOs’ responses, in answer to the question, “In your opinion, how aware are your employees of the company’s strategic business goals?,” were:

  • very aware (20%);
  • somewhat aware (59%);
  • not very aware (13%);
  • not at all aware (3%); and
  • don’t know/no answer (5%).

King said that companies whose employees are not aware of the firm’s goals still have an opportunity to rally teams around those targets and discuss strategic objectives.

“Even organizations still refining their vision should communicate to staff their initial vision and the company's progress toward realizing it,” he said.
