More than half of all members of generation Z are interested in starting their own businesses, according to a new survey from Universum.

In a report called Generation Z Grows Up, the research and advisory firm discusses a survey of approximately 50,000 people born between 1996 and 2000 and found that 55% of them have an entrepreneurial mindset. The study also found that 65% are “hopeful” about the future in general.

Jason Kipps, managing director for Canada for Universum said gen-Zers are relatively “up-side thinkers.”

“They have likely had more exposure to successes than failures,” added Kipps. “They still have many career options, from companies to startups to starting their own business and this leads to a general feeling of positivity.”

Kipps said more companies are starting to target generation Z, and generation Y (or millennials, born between 1980 and 1996) as they push out baby boomers as the dominant working demographic.

“More and more companies are beginning to target their recruitment activities and recruitment marketing investments toward this younger cohort,” said Kipps. “This attention helps young talent feel like their skills will be in demand and to feel more optimistic about their future prospects.”

However, four out of ten respondents said they fear they won’t find a job that matches their personality, something critical for members of generation Z, according to the survey.

The research report collected data from 46 countries.
