Do you see your occupation as a career, or just a paycheque?

If you are among the majority of Canadians, you see your work as just a job as opposed to part of a full vocation. A CareerBuilder.ca survey released April 23 found that 58% of workers in Canada think of their employment as simply a way to earn a living.

One of the main reasons for this is being dissatisfied with the work being done. The number one reason for this dissatisfaction, the survey found, is that employees don’t feel valued, with 61% of respondents saying they feel like “just a number.”

A close second is having a low salary (56%), followed by not liking a boss or supervisor (43%).

Among those who report being satisfied with their jobs, 80% say they enjoy their work because they like the people they work with.

Mark Bania, senior career adviser at CareerBuilder Canada, said there are things that employers can do to increase employee satisfaction.

“Offering frequent recognition, merit bonuses, training programs and clearly defined career paths are important ways to show workers what they mean to the company,” Bania said.

The study found that almost a quarter of those surveyed plan to look for new jobs this year.

“With new positions constantly being added across Canada each month that are enticing workers to change jobs, now is the time for employers to look at their recruitment strategies and make adjustments so their top talent doesn’t jump ship.”

Asking employees for their opinions could also reduce employee turnover, the survey found.
