National unemployment rate continues to slide in January; B.C.'s rate remains lower: StatsCan

The national unemployment rate fell a further 0.1% in January to 7.0%, after dropping to its lowest rate in four years in December 2012, according to Statistics Canada data released this morning.

The national unemployment rate fell a further 0.1% in January to 7.0%, after dropping to its lowest rate in four years in December 2012, according to Statistics Canada data released this morning.

B.C. unemployment in remains below the national average and fell by two percentage points to 6.3% in January.

According to the StatsCan's January Labour Force Survey, the decreases in unemployment, both nationally and in the province, were due to fewer people looking for work as Canada and B.C. lost 22,000 and 16,000 employed workers, respectively.

The lowest unemployment rates were found in:

  • Saskatchewan (4.0%);
  • Alberta (4.5%);
  • Manitoba (5.0%); and
  • British Columbia (6.3%).
