In response to growing demand for skilled workers in British Columbia, particularly in the liquefied natural gas (LNG) sector, the province’s Industry Training Authority (ITA) has qualified nine schools to provide construction craft worker training.

The ITA, which coordinates B.C.’s skilled trades system, said that construction trade helpers and labourers, also known as construction craft workers, are in particular demand.

“Qualifying these training providers is one of the ways that ITA is responding to industry labour demands and ensuring that British Columbians have the right skills, in the right place at the right time, said ITA CEO Gary Herman.

“We are excited for the opportunities that the LNG sector could provide British Columbians and we are taking action to make sure that they’re the first in line for these jobs.”

The schools that are now qualified to conduct the training are:

·  BCIT;

·  Camosun College;

·  College of New Caledonia;

·  Construction & Specialized Workers Training Society;

·  Kwantlen Polytechnic University;

·  Northwest Community College;

·  Okanagan College;

·  Selkirk College; and

·  Thompson Rivers University.

The schools could begin training as soon as early 2015.
