If you’re looking for work, head north—but not as far as you would normally think.
North Vancouver was the top-ranking B.C. city in a recently released Top 50 Hot Job Markets in Canada report. The city came seventh, jumping up from 29th, according to Express Employment Professionals, which compiled the list cross-referencing numbers from Statistics Canada and the federal Job Bank.
The next best place to find work in B.C. is in Victoria, which ranked 13th, moving up from 20th last year.
The most available job across B.C. is working as a babysitter or nanny, with retail salesperson coming in second.
The report outlines how the drop in oil has affected the job market, especially across Western Canada. In 2014, as seven of the 10 hottest job markets were in either B.C., Alberta or Saskatchewan; however, this year there is a 50-50 split between eastern and western provinces.
“The clear trend in our survey is a cooling of the once overheated markets,” said Robert Funk, the chairman and chief executive officer of Express Employment Professionals.
“For example, places like Fort McMurray (Wood Buffalo) with its focus on oil, was once the hottest job market in the country, but now ranks sixth.”
The best place in the entire country to find work is in Saint-Hyancinthe, Quebec, which is located in the Montérégie region southeast of Montreal. The most available job there is work as a retail salesperson or cook.
