More than nine in 10 Canadians say they express admiration for nurses (92%) and farmers (91%), making those professions the most respected in Canada, according to the results of an Insights West poll released June 1.
At the other end of the scale, politicians and car salespeople are the least respected in the country, with negative impressions reported by 71% and 61%, respectively, of those surveyed.
Responses varied widely across the demographics of those polled, however.
“Positive opinions towards some professions are not uniform across gender, age and political allegiance,” said Insights West vice-president of public affairs Mario Canseco.
“Women, for instance, are more likely to express respect for lawyers and Realtors (52% and 55%, respectively) than men (42% for each).”
Those who voted for the Conservative Party in last year’s federal election have a more positive opinion of accountants (91%) than do those who voted Liberal (83%) or New Democrat (69%). Conservatives were less likely to express respect for teachers (80%) than were Liberals (90%) and NDP voters (86%).
Other professions that were highly respected overall were veterinarians (87%), scientists (86%), doctors (85%), teachers (85%), architects (83%) and engineers (82%).
