Johnathon Strebly has been appointed director of creative services at HCMA Architecture + Design. Prior to this appointment, Strebly founded and managed The Notice Group, a brand strategy and communications agency. He also currently serves as president of the Society of Graphic Designers of Canada (GDC), is GDC national ethics chair and is a founding committee member of both CreativeMornings Vancouver and Interesting Vancouver.
Education
Kayoko Takeuchi has been appointed vice-president of finance and operations at the Justice Institute of British Columbia (JIBC). Takeuchi joined JIBC in 2005 and became director, finance and administration, in 2006. Prior to that, she held roles including controllership and operations management positions in the education, software, manufacturing, retail and wholesale sectors. She currently belongs to the Government Organizations’ Accounting and Auditing Forum as one of the representatives from the B.C. post-secondary sector.

Joel Lalonde, Shelley McDade and Launi Skinner have been elected to Central 1 Credit Union’s board of directors; Rob Paterson has been re-elected. Vancity exercised its right to appoint a director and appointed Jan O’Brien. Each director will serve a three-year term commencing at the conclusion of Central 1’s annual general and special meeting on April 28. Other directors on the board will be Bill Cooke, Elmer Epp, Kerry Hadad, Rick Hoevenaars, Angela Kaiser, Bill Kiss, Penny-Lynn McPherson, Blaize Reich and Rob Wellstood. Outgoing directors are Anita Braha, Keith Brain, Kelly McGiffin and Emmett McGrath.
Julian Costley and Dinesh Dhamija have been appointed to Fineqia International Inc.’s board of advisers. Costley is the former CEO of E-Trade UK. Dhamija is the founder, former chairman and CEO of Ebookers.com, an Internet travel agency, as well as the founder of the Copper Beech Group. Fineqia’s business model is to provide an online platform and associated services for the placement of debt and equity securities, initially in the U.K.

Jonathan Chovancek, executive chef, and Josh Gonneau, chef de cuisine, have launched new menus and joined the teams at Cibo Trattoria and Uva Wine & Cocktail Bar. Chovancek, co-owner of the boutique bitters company Bittered Sling, has more than two decades of experience in restaurants. Gonneau opened his own farm-to-table restaurant, Land and Fire Local Kitchen, in Caledon, Ontario, in 2015 before relocating to the West Coast last year.

Richard (Rick) Bennett has joined DLA Piper (Canada) LLP’s Vancouver office as senior tax counsel. Bennett has more than 30 years of tax experience and joins the firm from Borden Ladner Gervais, where he was formerly the regional leader of its Vancouver tax practice. He currently serves on the board of governors at the Canadian Tax Foundation and is a contributing editor to Bloomberg’s tax managers’ international forum.

Regina Marklund, business development manager of Turner Construction’s Vancouver business unit, has been appointed director of membership/president elect of CREW Vancouver. Marklund has been an active member of the non-profit association that supports professional women to become leaders in commercial real estate since 2012, and sat on the communications and events committees for CREW Philadelphia.

NorLand Ltd. donated $23,647 to the CKNW Orphans’ Fund. The donation was made in support of B.C. kids living with special needs at the CKNW Orphans’ Fund’s 39th annual Pledge Day, held on November 30 at Terminal City Club. NorLand has donated more than $215,000, as well as volunteer hours, to the CKNW Orphans’ Fund over the last 20 years.
100WomenVan donated $7,400 to PLEA Community Services’ KidStart program, a volunteer-driven one-to-one mentoring program for children aged six to 12 across the Lower Mainland. The program originated as a way to assist the younger siblings of youth who had entered PLEA’s youth justice programs, by providing them with a trained, caring adult role model to prevent them from following the same path. The program has an average monthly caseload of 150 kids.
Andrew Mahon Foundation donated $2,000 to Big Sisters of BC Lower Mainland. These funds will help the organization match at-risk girls with supportive mentors through the Study Buddy mentoring program.
