Development/Construction

Kirsten Meissner has been appointed as senior project manager of ZGF Cotter Architects. Meissner’s recent experience includes both the compliance and proponent sides of design-build projects.

Education

Liz Bicknell, a communications specialist with a 30-year career in the B.C. public service, has been appointed by the provincial government to the board of governors at Royal Roads University. Before her retirement in 2015, Bicknell provided advice and issues management counsel at the most senior levels of the provincial government. Before coming to Canada in 1984, Bicknell served with the United Nations High Commission for Refugees, working in Ethiopia, Uganda and Kenya.

Jennifer Cudlipp, Gurpal Siekham and Dave Mitchell have been appointed as directors to the Justice Institute of British Columbia (JIBC) Foundation’s board of directors. Cudlipp is director of talent acquisition and organizational effectiveness at Lifelabs; she also serves on the Rain City Housing board of directors. Siekham is a branch manager at Westminster Savings Credit Union, as well as manager of the credit union’s Member Service Centre. Siekham will also serve on the JIBC Foundation board as treasurer. Mitchell, president, Dave Mitchell & Associates Ltd., has served as a JIBC Foundation director in the past. Mitchell’s company provides consulting services to fire, police and emergency medical services departments. Mitchell previously served as director of operations for E-Comm 9-1-1, Emergency Communications for B.C. Inc. and was involved in the implementation of the first integrated 9-1-1 call centre in Canada.

Finance

Kathryn Britnell has been appointed associate vice president of programs and business development for HUB International Insurance Brokers. Britnell previously served as manager of special programs and business development with the insurance company Reliance.

Health/Medical

Makarand Jawadekar has been appointed chief science officer of PreveCeutical Medical Inc. Jawadekar worked at Pfizer Inc.’s Groton-New London research and development operations in Connecticut for 28 years. At Pfizer, he was responsible for the drug delivery technology assessment function involving external drug delivery technologies. He began his professional career at Pfizer Central Research in early 1982.

Hospitality/Tourism/Convention

Philippe C. Grandbois has been appointed creative director of mixology of Chambar. Grandbois spent several years with the Ritz Carlton Hotel Group overseas, working in more than 11 countries. Grandbois is a certified spirits specialist certified by the International Sommeliers Guild.

Non-profit

Nicola Hill has been appointed director of the labour participation department at the United Way Lower Mainland. Hill was previously a part of United Way’s fundraising team. She has worked for 25 years in the social justice movement, serving within unions and labour bodies. Hill also spent 10 years working in B.C. politics, including director of organization with the BC NDP.

James Bartram has been appointed vice-president of education at Vancouver Aquarium Marine Science Centre. In this newly created role, Bartram will lead a team of educators working to expand the organization’s curriculum-based education programs with its mobile classroom on wheels that travels to communities across Canada. Most recently, Bartram was the Canadian Wildlife Federation’s education director. Prior to that, he was the founder and education director with Parks Canada’sPalisades Stewardship Education Centre in Jasper, Alberta.

Sales/Marketing

Cydoney Curran and Natalie Walters have been appointed account coordinator and social media coordinator, respectively, at Jive PR + Digital’s Vancouver office. Curran has community management and public relations experience at RBC and Holmes PR. Walters is a former journalist and has contributed to Canada Wide Media publications, including BC Living.

Hats Off

Business in Vancouver welcomes submissions from local small businesses and large corporations alike that demonstrate examples of corporate philanthropy and community involvement in the Vancouver area. High-resolution images are also welcome.

RBC’s Coquitlam Town Centre location donated $1,000 to Crossroads Hospice Society. The donation is a result of RBC’s Day of Service program, which supports employees who volunteer in the community through a donation to a charity of their choice.

The Telus Charitable Giving Program donated $4,830.40 to Crossroads Hospice Society.

Fernie Brewing Co. donated $6,062 to the Fernie Senior Citizens Centre. Funds were raised through Fernie Brewing Co.’s Cheers to Charity! program. For $5, visitors to Fernie Brewing Co.’s tasting room can try a paddle of four beers from the daily tap line up and proceeds go directly to the current charitable recipient.

New Westminster Firefighters’ Charitable Society donated $1,000 to its endowment at Douglas College. The firefighters are merging their existing endowment with the City of New Westminster’s 150th anniversary bursary, bringing that fund to just over $32,000.

Rogers Sugar Vancouver of Lantic Inc. donated $38,000 to Union Gospel Mission. The funds will be used to serve more than 3,000 meals in the Downtown Eastside at the mission’s annual summer BBQ. The money was also used to send several Downtown Eastside families to the PNE. •
