Majid Bahrami, Canada research chair in alternative energy conversion systems and professor at Simon Fraser University’s School of Mechatronic Systems Engineering, is the recipient of a 2016 Canada Clean50 Award in the research and development category. Bahrami was cited for discovering new products and processes that improve the efficiency of heating/cooling systems for a broad range of uses, such as in vehicles, electronics and buildings, and for his leadership in training students to design sustainability solutions.
Health/Medical
Hal Siden, medical director, Canuck Place Children’s Hospice, was presented with the Dr. Parminder Singh Award of Distinction by the BC Pediatric Society for his leading work in the field of pediatrics. Siden’s clinical, education and research interests are in pediatric palliative care, pediatric pain management and complex care management for vulnerable children. Siden is a clinical professor in the department of pediatrics at the University of British Columbia, with a joint appointment in the interdepartmental division of palliative medicine. Additionally, he is a senior associate clinician scientist at the Child & Family Research Institute and is principal investigator on several projects funded by the Canadian Institutes of Health Research. Siden also founded the telehealth program at Children’s & Women’s Health Centre of BC, which uses advanced telecommunications for long-distance clinics and education around the province.

Prentice Durbin and Steven Lukas have joined Harper Grey LLP as associate counsel within the firm’s business law group; Lukas will co-chair the group. Durbin and Lukas each have diverse practices advising international, national and small business in a broad range of business and investment areas and join Harper Grey from the Vancouver office of Fasken Martineau DuMoulin LLP.

Rudy Buttignol has been reappointed president and CEO of Knowledge Network Corp., a provincial Crown corporation. Buttignol first joined the network in 2007, and his current term is for five years, ending in 2020.

Robert Pease, currently a director of Pilot Gold Inc., has been appointed interim president and CEO of the company. Pease is the former president, CEO and director of Sabina Gold & Silver Corp. and previously the founder, president, CEO and director of Terrane Metals Corp. Pease is also currently a director of Red Eagle Mining, Pure Gold, Luna Gold and Endurance Gold.
Richard Williams, vice-president of engineering and development at Novagold Resources Inc., has been appointed to Kaminak Gold Corp.’s board of directors. Williams was nominated by Kaminak shareholder Electrum Strategic Opportunities Fund LP, pursuant to the terms of financing announced on September 28. Williams has more than 30 years of experience in the mining industry.
Stephen Scott has been appointed interim CEO at Entrée Gold Inc., replacing Greg Crowe, who is departing Entrée to pursue other opportunities. Scott has more than 25 years of global experience in all mining industry sectors, most recently serving as CEO of Minenet Advisors, a capital markets and management advisory consultancy.
Darren Hall has been appointed chief operating officer at Newmarket Gold Inc., effective December 7. Hall will be based in Australia and have responsibility for all of the company’s operating mines and growth projects. He joins the company from Newmont Mining Corp., where he held roles of increasing responsibility throughout the organization for the past 29 years.

Pho has a strong interest in conscious fashion and works with organizations like Eco Fashion Week, which is dedicated to stimulating the growth and development of sustainable practices in the fashion industry.
Dale Steeves has been appointed vice-president of communications at Laura Ballance Media Group. With more than 20 years of experience, including 10 as an award-winning journalist, Steeves has worked extensively in top communications roles, notably as director of communications for the B.C. premier’s office under Gordon Campbell and most recently as VP of executive and corporate communications for Telus.

Chevron Canada donated $5,100 in gift cards to Douglas College students accessing practicum sites outside the U-Pass zone.
H.Y. Louie Co. Ltd. recently partnered with One to One Literacy, donating $7,500 to the organization and sponsoring the Top Up at the Till campaign that ran in all IGA/Marketplace IGA stores throughout B.C. during the month of September. •
