Finance

Barry Delaney has been appointed CEO at SASCU Financial Group (Salmon Arm Savings and Credit Union), effective March 7, 2016. Delaney brings 20 years of experience leading all critical functions of a credit union. He held several senior management and executive leadership roles with Envision Financial prior to its merger with First West Credit Union. Delaney is currently the interim CEO for Northern Savings Credit Union, a four-branch credit union with wealth and insurance subsidiaries in Prince Rupert, where he is fulfilling his commitments until the end of February.

Health/Medical

Jeff Reading, an indigenous researcher of Mohawk ancestry with more than two decades of experience in enhancing knowledge in indigenous health issues, has been appointed the inaugural First Nations Health Authority (FNHA) chair in heart health and wellness at St. Paul’s Hospital. The chair position was co-developed by FHNA, St. Paul’s Hospital and Simon Fraser University with shared funding to support the FNHA chair for 10 years. Reading recently concluded a one-year term as interim director of the University of Toronto’s newly created Waakebiness-Bryce Institute for Indigenous Health at the Dalla Lana School of Public Health.

Hospitality/Tourism/Convention

Newly appointed directors to the Pacific National Exhibition’s board are Jackie Hogue, director, human resources, Gordon Food Services, and Ty Speer, president and CEO, Tourism Vancouver. Outgoing board directors are Peter Legge, chairman and CEO, Canada Wide Media Ltd., and Cheryl Carline, president and CEO, Burnaby Hospital Foundation.

Havovie Suraliwalla, conference co-ordinator, Sea Course Cruises, was recently named one of Professional Convention Management Association’s “20 in Their Twenties” honourees.

Human Resources

Chris Moubert has joined SearchWest Inc. as team lead, bringing his 10 years of experience to the firm’s accounting and finance division. Moubert was previously senior recruiter with Hays and Robert Half, managing real estate, construction and technology sectors.

Legal

Rong (Lauren) Liang and Pratibha Sharma have become partners at Clark Wilson LLP, while Reid Brooks has recently joined the firm as an associate within the insurance and infrastructure, construction and procurement groups. Liang is a partner within the firm’s estate and trust litigation, wealth preservation and strata groups. Sharma is a partner within the firm’s corporate and commercial, private company transactions and labour and employment groups; she is also the managing lawyer of the firm’s corporate services department.

Margaret MacDonald, associate, recently joined the tax group at Dentons Canada LLP’s Vancouver office.

Roland Hurst recently joined Farris, Vaughan, Wills & Murphy LLP as a corporate associate practising in the areas of corporate and commercial, mergers and acquisitions, securities and corporate finance, mining and technology. Prior to joining Farris, Hurst practised at the Vancouver office of a national law firm.

Jean Pogge has been appointed president at Ecotrust Canada, taking over from Brenda Kuecks in a planned transition. Pogge relocated from Chicago, where she had worked for 18 years at ShoreBank, a community development and conservation bank in the U.S. She served as executive vice-president until 2010 when she took over leadership of Delta Institute, a non-profit social enterprise.

Technology

Craig Hughes, previously vice-president, delivery, at QuickMobile, has been appointed to the newly created position of vice-president, business development, at the company. Hughes came to QuickMobile in 2010 with over a decade of leadership experience at software and technology companies such as Mobile Operandi, EQO Communications and Altus Solutions.

Name change

DTZ Vancouver Real Estate Ltd. has joined the Lee & Associates Group of Companies, the largest broker-owned commercial real estate firm in the U.S. The opening of the Vancouver office marks its first location in Canada and outside the U.S.

Hats Off

Business in Vancouver welcomes submissions from local small businesses and large corporations alike that demonstrate examples of corporate philanthropy and community involvement in the Vancouver area. High-resolution images are also welcome.

Saxx Underwear donated $20,000 to Union Gospel Mission. The funds will be used to help men and women in recovery transform their lives.

The Pacific Open Heart Association, whose members have all undergone open-heart surgery, has made a $10,000 donation to Royal Columbian Hospital Foundation following its Moe Pitcher annual golf tournament in June 2015.

Shoppers Drug Mart donated $6,150 to Royal Columbian Hospital Foundation, in support of women’s mental health.

RBC Foundation has donated $5,000 to Crossroads Hospice in support of its second Bucket List Festival, taking place on February 20. The donation will help cover the costs of putting on this all-day public educational event, including venue rental and participant materials.

Proceeds of more than $10,000 from Whitewater Ski Resort’s first Community Day, held in January, were donated to Nelson Cares Society and Avalanche Awareness Beyond the Boundaries. Each organization received $5,540. In addition, skiers, who paid $10 for a day of skiing, donated food to the Nelson Food Cupboard.

Employees of Omicron Canada Inc. donated more than $30,000 to the United Way of the Lower Mainland (UWLM). Omicron Canada has supported the UWLM and its initiatives since 2007.

Peggy Howard donated $7,000 to the Adoptive Families Association of BC. This donation ensures the continuation of the Howard Legacy Youth Fund, a bursary that enables youth in and from government care to pursue a post-secondary program. •
