Finance

Bruce Schouten has been appointed chief risk officer at Coast Capital Savings. Schouten recently held senior positions at Office of the Superintendent of Financial Institutions and TD Bank. He has more than 25 years of experience in all facets of the financial services industry, including corporate and commercial lending and credit adjudication, credit policy and enterprise risk management.

Hospitality/Tourism/Convention

Brad Simmons and David Stanton have been appointed director of sales and marketing and director of food and beverage, respectively, at Rosewood Hotel Georgia. Simmons has more than 13 years of experience in the luxury hospitality industry and has a long history with the Rosewood brand, having served as interim director of sales and marketing for Rosewood Hotels & Resorts and director of sales at Rosewood London. Stanton was previously with Four Seasons Hotels & Resorts, holding leadership roles at Four Seasons Hotel Hong Kong and Four Seasons Resort Koh Samui, and also assisted in the openings of Four Seasons Hotel Macau and Four Seasons Resort Seychelles. Most recently, Stanton owned and operated a restaurant and bar in Bangkok.

Scott Marescaux and Jeff Scouten have joined Hakemi & Ridgedale LLP as an associate and as associate counsel, respectively. Marescaux represents corporate and individual clients in a variety of commercial litigation matters in the courts and in mediation and arbitration. Scouten represents corporate and individual clients in complex litigation, arbitration and mediation. He also advises clients before administrative tribunals, including in disciplinary matters.

Media

Sacha McLean, president and CEO of McLean Ventures Ltd., the investment unit of the McLean Group, has joined the board of KCTS 9, the public media programming station based out of Seattle. McLean is also chairman of 50° North Productions, a scripted television production company, and vice-chairman of McLean Group, a second-generation diversified family holding company active in film and television studios, helicopter charters, real estate investment and communications.

Sales/Marketing

William Greenbaum has been promoted to president and CEO of Brilliant Health International Distributors and has switched the focus of the company from natural health products to sporting goods.

Vincent Wauters has been appointed CEO at Hunter, the British heritage brand renowned for its footwear and outerwear, effective March 1. Wauters previously served as president of Arc’teryx. Prior to joining Arc’teryx, Wauters served as senior vice-president, operations, at Amer Sports Corp. and previously worked for Newell Rubbermaid in various operational roles from 2002 to 2008 and for Amazon in France.

Ted Morgan has joined Powershifter as senior project manager/scrum master. Morgan was previously head of digital production at Rethink and principal/founder of CabinWorks Media.

Technology

Gordon Hardwick has joined PlaceSpeak Inc. as business development executive. Prior to this appointment, Hardwick served as manager of community affairs at the BC Film Commission from 1999 to 2013, then as director of film services from 2013 onwards when the commission changed its name to Creative BC.

Veritas Communications has opened an office in Vancouver, headed by consumer brand specialist Brendan Bailey. Bailey joins Veritas after heading his own firm for the past four years and has worked on behalf of some of Canada’s largest corporations, including Bell, General Mills, HSBC, Moxie’s Grill & Bar and McDonald’s.

Hats Off

Business in Vancouver welcomes submissions from local small businesses and large corporations alike that demonstrate examples of corporate philanthropy and community involvement in the Vancouver area. High-resolution images are also welcome.

Cenovus Energy donated $100,000 to the Pacific Salmon Foundation’s year-end appeal to support salmon research and restoration in the Strait of Georgia through the Salish Sea Marine Survival Project. During the last 20 years, wild coho and chinook have declined by 90% in the strait.

The Lawson Foundation donated a $3,000 grant to support Children of the Street Society’s TCO² workshops in rural and remote communities. The Taking Care of Ourselves, Taking Care of Others workshops are designed and delivered by youth, for youth, about preventing sexual exploitation.

Michele Walter and Alice Huang were the 2015 recipients of the Dr. M. Wosk Scholarship for Youth Environmental Leadership, in the amounts of $1,000 and $500, respectively. The scholarships were awarded by the Pacific Parklands Foundation at Metro Vancouver Regional Parks’ Parksfest.

CKNW Orphans’ Fund donated $15,000 to Big Sisters of BC Lower Mainland in support of its Go Girls! program.

RBC Foundation donated $20,000 to the Multiple Sclerosis Society of Canada. The funds will support the society’s community outreach program.

Road-building contractor Winvan Paving, which is celebrating its 50th anniversary this year, continues to support newborn care at Royal Columbian Hospital with a $15,000 donation towards an ultrasound machine for the neonatal intensive care unit. The gift is part of a $65,000 pledge by Winvan to purchase the equipment.

West Kootenay Community TEETH Clinic Society won Pacific Blue Cross’ 75th-anniversary Share the Care campaign. The society will receive a $50,000 donation from Pacific Blue Cross Health Foundation for achieving the most votes for its video storytelling campaign. The runner-up and recipient of $10,000 is Charlford House Society for Women in Burnaby. The Crisis Intervention & Suicide Prevention Centre of BC, Streetohome and Canim Lake Band Wellness Centre – Tsq’escenemc People each received $5,000. The Rotary Club of West Vancouver Sunrise donated $5,000 to the Lions Gate Hospital Foundation. The funds will go towards the purchase of new medical equipment at Lions Gate Hospital.

Variety – The Children’s Charity donated $35,000 to Royal Columbian Hospital Foundation. $20,000 is directed to fund a music therapist, whose work helps to elevate the mood, encourage communication and reduce anxiety for children admitted to Royal Columbian Hospital’s pediatric unit. $15,000 will help support families from outside the Lower Mainland who face financial hardships because a child or pregnant mother is hospitalized at Royal Columbian.

Pacific Quorum Properties’ employees, together with the owners/residents of more than 50 strata buildings the company manages, supported the Greater Vancouver, Surrey, Richmond, Whistler and Coquitlam food bank societies by donating 2.1 tonnes of food over the 2015 holiday season. •
