Finance

In addition to Tina Osen’s previously announced acceptance of the role of president, HUB International Canada – Osen previously served as CEO and chief sales officer (CSO) of HUB International’s Greater Vancouver region – the executive management team of the Greater Vancouver region have new roles: Dave Terry, previously executive vice-president, is now president and chief sales officer. Jennifer Perry, previously executive vice-president, is now chief operating officer. Barbara MacPhail, previously chief operating officer, is transitioning to vice-president, personal lines Canada (Duck Creek). George Bozanin will continue to lead the overall management of HUB’s insurer relationships in the Greater Vancouver region as chief marketing officer. Carol Mills will take on the role of vice-president of sales in addition to her current role as employee benefits practice leader. Phaedra Andrusiak is now executive liability specialist. Monique Mehl, previously business team project manager, is now assistant vice-president, personal lines Canada (Duck Creek).

Hospitality/Tourism/Convention

Branislav Henselmann has been appointed managing director of cultural services at the City of Vancouver. Henselmann previously worked as executive director, Ballet BC, and currently serves as chair, Canadian Ballet Companies, for the National Dance Council, and as a board director for the Canadian Dance Assembly. Previously, Henselmann was the artistic curator with New York City Ballet’s Choreographic Institute and head of programming and learning at DanceEast, a national dance organization.

Nathan Jones has re-joined the team at WhiteWater, the global designer and manufacturer of waterpark products and family attractions, as global head of attractions business development. Jones is an established industry veteran who spent the last three years with Vekoma Rides Manufacturing as its vice-president of sales and marketing, North America. Previous positions include being part of the management team at Brogent Technologies; prior to that, Jones spent eight years with WhiteWater as sales director, primarily focused on accounts in the Americas.

Non-profit

Rene Appelmans and Caitlin Jung have joined Canuck Place Children’s Hospice as director of finance, facilities and information technology, and cause marketing co-ordinator, respectively. Appelmans joins Canuck Place from a similar role in public education and has more than 20 years of business finance experience. Jung previously served as head of business development at Singapore Committee for UN Women, focusing on corporate charitable partnerships in Asia-Pacific and beyond.  She brings experience from both the non-profit and profit-making sectors.

Stan Gadek has agreed to join the board of directors of Jet Metal Corp. on completion of the previously announced business combination transaction between Jet Metal and Canada Jetlines Ltd. On completion of the transaction, Jet Metal will be a publicly traded holding company that will carry out the business of Jetlines through a wholly-owned operating subsidiary. Gadek is a senior airline executive who served as president, chief executive officer and chief financial officer of Sun Country Airlines - a Minneapolis-St. Paul-based scheduled service and charter airline operating Boeing 737 aircraft that has exceeded more than US$400 million in annual revenue.

Alejandro Adams and Jonathan Hermanson have been appointed chief financial officer and vice-president of corporate development, respectively, of Rugby Mining Ltd. Adams replaces Hermanson in the role of CFO; he has four years of experience in the mineral exploration industry, having previously worked as the corporate controller for Exeter Resource Corp. and Extorre Gold Mines Ltd. Hermanson held the position of CFO for more than three years; he has more than 10 years of experience in the mineral industry working with Rugby, Exeter and Extorre. Hermanson has been with Rugby Mining since the company was founded in 2007.

Name change

The TwentyTen Group, one of Canada’s sponsorship agencies, has changed its brand to TTG Partnerships and broadened its scope of services. Founded in 2010, the firm has had success with clients such as the Canadian Olympic Team and Whistler Blackcomb, and currently serves as the agency for the Trans Canada Trail, Athletics Canada, Canada Basketball, Rugby Canada and HSBC Canada Sevens, and consultative strategist for clients such as Freestyle Canada and the Vancouver Economic Commission.

New in town

Railtown Cafe has officially opened its newest location at 968 Howe Street in downtown Vancouver. With the original Railtown location on Railway Street celebrating its fifth year in business, the company’s newest outpost occupies 1,700 square feet of space in a new LEED Gold-certified building that offers seating for 45 guests.

Hats Off

Coast Capital Savings donated $735,000 to Dollars with Sense, a Junior Achievement of British Columbia (JABC) financial literacy program aimed at teens. This donation renews the organization’s previous three-year partnership, announced in 2014 and takes Coast Capital’s contribution to the program to more than $1 million. Over the past six years, Coast Capital’s investments have helped expand JABC’s financial literacy training to reach 37,000 youth provincewide.

Tapestry Foundation for Health Care received $50,000 in donations ($10,000 each from Miriam Yu, Heather Pei Huang and Winnie Y. Chung and $20,000 from Sing and Patricia Yeo) to launch its campaign to raise $880,000 to support the surgical program at Mount Saint Joseph Hospital (MSJ) through the 2017 Scotiabank Feast of Fortune gala. Proceeds from the 10th anniversary Chinese New Year fundraiser will help purchase high-tech surgical tools and technology required for a variety of surgeries and procedures performed through the surgical program at the hospital.

Employees from Omicron Canada Inc. raised $32,874 in donations for the United Way of the Lower Mainland. Omicron Canada has supported the charity and its initiative for 15 years. 

RBC Foundation donated $20,000 to the Science Fair Foundation of British Columbia.

Blue Sky Clothing Co. donated $2,821 to Decoda Literacy Foundation. The funds were raised through the company’s Socks for Literacy fundraiser, where $1 from each sale of specified purple socks at five stores across B.C. (including three in Metro Vancouver) was donated.

The River Foundation donated a $50,000 grant to Big Sisters of BC Lower Mainland. The funds will help the organization match at-risk girls with a supportive mentor through their one-to-one Big Sisters mentoring program. •
