Borden Ladner Gervais LLP’s Vancouver office recently welcomed three new associates: Katherine M. McNeill, Andrew Nathan and John Pratt. McNeill practices in business and corporate commercial law, purchase and sale of a business, private companies and privacy and data security. Nathan practices in labour and employment and pensions and benefits. Pratt practises in construction, commercial litigation, insurance and tort liability and arbitration.

Graeme White has been appointed executive director of Vancouver International Marathon Society, replacing Charlene Krepiakevich, who held the position for five years. White has more than 20 years of experience in sport business and operations and has worked at a senior management level developing and delivering many high profile events and brands including the Olympic Games,  FIFA World Cups (Men’s and Women’s), the UEFA Champions League and the Commonwealth Games.

BC Sports Hall of Fame recently formally welcomed 11 individuals and one team as part of its 2016 induction class. In the athlete category: Dave Barr (golf), Dave Cutler (football), Geri Donnelly (soccer), Steve Nash (basketball), and Carl Valentine (soccer). In the coach-builder category, Wally Buono (football), Diane Clement (athletics) and Allison McNeill (basketball). Harry Manson (soccer), also known as Xul-si-malt, which means “one who leaves his mark”, was inducted in the pioneer category; Wendy Long was inducted in the media category, Arthur Griffiths received the W.A.C. Bennett Award and the 1994-1995 Kamloops Blazers hockey team was inducted in the team category.

Thomas Freehan, a hydrogeologist with more than 20 years of professional experience, has joined Zadar Ventures Ltd.’s advisory board.

Brigitte Boutin, naval commander, Royal Canadian Navy, has been appointed the first finance and operating officer at Ocean Networks Canada, the University of Victoria’s ocean observatory facility. Boutin has held several senior naval positions, including deputy-comptroller of the Maritime Forces Pacific headquarters; financial comptroller and commanding officer of the headquarters for Maritime Forces Atlantic in Halifax; and most recently, base administration officer at the Canadian Forces base in Esquimalt. Boutin has also represented Canada at a number of committees and working groups on armaments, logistics and financial resources, including the Joint Delegation of Canada to NATO in Brussels.

Hope Kerby, Laura Lombardi and Rhiannon Lytle of Jive PR + Digital have been promoted to the positions of social media specialist, account manager and account executive, respectively. Kerby started with Jive in 2015 as a social media coordinator, Lombardi also joined the firm in 2015 after working with Free the Children. Lytle interned at Public Inc. before joining Jive as an account coordinator.

Paul Healey, former CEO/president of BCAA, Radiant Communications, Mr. Lube Canada and Bell Canada, has joined the board of directors of the software development company, Aprio.

Hats Off

Business in Vancouver welcomes submissions from local small businesses and large corporations alike that demonstrate examples of corporate philanthropy and community involvement in the Vancouver area. High-resolution images are also welcome.

The Jack and Sylvia Gin Foundation donated $20,000 to Royal Columbian Hospital Foundation to purchase ScopeGuide technology for the hospital’s gastroenterology department. The equipment makes colonoscopies easier and more comfortable by providing a precise 3D view of the scope’s positioning during patient exams. A $10,000 donation from the Drive for the Cure Foundation also supported the purchase of the ScopeGuide.

The United Way of the Lower Mainland donated $95,917 to Big Sisters of BC Lower Mainland. The funds will be used to support mentoring programs.

GWL Realty Advisors Inc., a wholly owned subsidiary of Great-West Life, donated $13,000 to Canuck Place Children’s Hospice, which provides palliative care to children and teens with life-threatening illnesses.

Since mid-May, Whole Foods Market shoppers in Canada have donated more than $50,000 to the Canadian Red Cross to benefit those impacted by the Fort McMurray fire.

Employees of the Envision Financial division of Langley-based First West Credit Union donated $8,086 to Crohn’s & Colitis Canada. Funds were raised through participation in the 21st annual Gutsy Walk.
