Human Resources

RLG International has appointed a new chief operating officer, Rick Heyland. Heyland joined RLG in 1989 and his career with the firm has carried him from project manager to team leader, training manager, business unit leader, vice-president, regional executive vice-president and now COO, Americas.

Education

Santa Ono has been appointed president and vice-chancellor of the University of British Columbia. His principal research interests focus on the immune system and eye disease. Since 2012 Ono has served as president of the University of Cincinnati (UC) in Cincinnati, Ohio. Prior to that, he was senior vice-president for academic affairs and provost at UC.

Legal

Bull, Housser & Tupper LLP has recently welcomed several lawyers to the firm. Richard Johnson is counsel in the firm’s intellectual property group, Esther Oh is an associate in the tax group, Christie S. Wilson is an associate in the firm’s real estate group, Pam Cyr is director of student programs and Sarah McCalla has rejoined the firm as an associate in the environmental group.

Non-Profit

The B.C. and Yukon chapter of the Children’s Wish Foundation of Canada welcomes new volunteer board members; Alan Boroditsky, Ernie Gauvreau, David Goertz, Christine Sorensen and Dean Williams.

MatthewSmedley has been appointed CEO and executive director at Mission Possible. He succeeds Brian Postlewait, who initiated a planned succession in an effort to live closer to his extended family in the U.S.

Resources

Don Poirier has been appointed to the board of directors of ATAC Resources Ltd. Poirier worked as an exploration geologist before becoming a sell-side mining analyst at several Canadian investment firms over a 20-year period. Most recently, he was vice-president of corporate development for Hecla Mining Co.

Trevor Rabb has stepped down as vice-president of exploration of First Point Minerals in order to focus on other opportunities. Rabb will remain an adviser to First Point on an ongoing basis. The company will pursue a voluntary delisting of its common shares from the Toronto Stock Exchange and will be submitting an application for a concurrent listing of the company’s common shares on the TSX Venture Exchange (TSX-V). The decision to move to the TSX-V was made in order to reduce annual administrative costs.

Tony Makuch has resigned as executive vice-president and president of Canadian operations of Tahoe Resources Inc., effective July 15, 2016. Ron Clayton, Tahoe’s president and chief operating officer, will assume day-to-day management of the company’s Lake Shore Gold division. Makuch joined Tahoe in April 2016 following the company’s acquisition of Lake Shore Gold, where he had served as president and chief executive officer since March 2008. He has resigned to accept a CEO position within the Canadian gold mining industry.

Sales/Marketing

Tracey Swain has been appointed chief financial officer at O2E Brands, the banner company to 1-800-Got-Junk?, Wow 1 Day Painting, You Move Me and Shack Shine. Swain comes to O2E Brands from Lululemon Athletica, where she served as VP, internal audit. Prior to this position, she was part of the finance team at TaylorMade Adidas-Golf Co. for a decade and served as VP, corporate finance, managing the financial information and reporting in a multi-branded environment for TaylorMade, Adidas-Golf, Ashworth and Adams.

Hats Off

Business in Vancouver welcomes submissions from local small businesses and large corporations alike that demonstrate examples of corporate philanthropy and community involvement in the Vancouver area. High-resolution images are also welcome.

Variety – The Children’s Charity has donated $4,800 to the Down Syndrome Research Foundation. The funds will provide scholarships for children with Down syndrome to attend thefoundation’s summer school program. The program is open to people with Down syndrome aged 10 to 20.

100 Women Who Care Vancouver donated $6,600 to the Lipstick Project Foundation. The Lipstick Project is a Vancouver-based charity that provides free professional spa services for men, women and children facing significant health challenges across Metro Vancouver. The donation will support the project’s expansions into Adanac Park Lodge,Camp Goodtimes with the Canadian Cancer Society, and the Nancy Chan Palliative Ambulatory Clinic.

The City of North Vancouver recently donated a $3,000 community services grant to Big Sisters of BC Lower Mainland to support the mentoring programs the organization operates in North Vancouver.

Chevron donated $30,000 to Vancouver Community College’s (VCC) 10th annual Tooth Trolley program. This fund allows more than 200 children in Vancouver to receive free dental care and education administered by VCC’s certified dental assisting, dental hygiene and dental reception students and faculty.

RBC Foundation donated $5,000 to Vancouver International Children’s Festival. The funds will be directed to the festival’s Youth for Youth program, benefiting young emerging artists seeking mentorship in visual and performing arts.

United Way of Lower Mainland has donated a $98,285 grant to Big Brothers of Greater Vancouver to help provide local children with mentors.

Richmond Hospital Foundation’s recent golf tournament raised $250,000 to improve local health care in Richmond.
