Darlene Hyde and Kathleen Kennedy-Strath have been appointed chair and vice-chair, respectively, at Westminster Savings’ board of directors. Hyde was previously the vice-chair of the board since 2012. Kennedy-Strath was previously a member of the board since 2007.

Legal

Samantha Barker has joined Farris, Vaughn, Wills & Murphy LLP as an associate in the firm’s corporate, commercial and securities practice group.

Non-profit

Leah Shepherd has joined the board of directors at FORED BC Society. FORED BC is a registered charity that provides sustainability and educational tools to resource-based communities throughout B.C., including First Nations. Shepherd is an associate lawyer at Hakemi & Ridgedale LLP and has worked in the forestry industry as well as the oil and gas industries in B.C.

Resources

Rick Conte will be stepping down as executive vice-president and interim CEO of the Association for Mineral Exploration, effective June 16. Conte will continue to be active in the resource industry on a voluntary and part-time basis.

Hats Off

The Business Association of Richmond donated $10,000 to the Richmond Hospital Foundation at the association’s inauguration dinner RBC Foundation donated $5,000 to Crossroads Hospice in this year’s 15th annual Hike for Hospice, a five-kilometre fundraising walk that supports people living with a terminal illness and their loved ones. The funds were donated from the foundation in recognition of RBC employees’ participation in the walk; RBC’s team had one of the largest teams, with 39 walkers taking part in the hike.

Fairmont Chateau Whistler donated $10,000 to BC Adaptive Snowsports. The funds will assist in training volunteer instructors in B.C. to increase capacity for teaching adaptive skiing and snowboarding.

The Crystal Gala Foundation donated $50,000 to Langley Memorial Hospital. The funds will go towards the purchase of a picture archiving and communication system, which will help radiologists read mammograms, breast ultrasound, breast MRI and radiology exams to better understand a patient’s breast history.

Hastings Racecourse donated $5,000 to posAbilities Association of BC. The funds will go towards summer youth camp bursaries, helping youth with developmental disabilities and autism to develop social and pre-employment skills.

The Shewan Foundation has donated $35,000 to YWCA Fraser Gardens Housing. The funds will support its community development program that provides connections to community resources for single mothers and their children.

The Burnaby Board of Trade received the award for environmental excellence in the category of business stewardship from the City of Burnaby for its program, a Pledge for a Sustainable Community. The program is an online resource that helps businesses take steps toward becoming environmentally sustainable.

The Ames Family Foundation donated $5,000 to Big Sisters of BC Lower Mainland. These funds will help the organization match at-risk girls with supportive mentors through its one-to-one mentoring program.

The Cottonwood Foundation donated $50,000 to Big Sisters of BC Lower Mainland. This provides $40,000 to support a scholarship program for Little Sisters to pursue secondary education and $10,000 to assist the organization in ensuring its services are accessible to all Lower Mainland girls by funding translation services. •
