Finance

Robert Phelps has been appointed executive general manager, Canada, for Silver Chef, a dedicated hospitality financier. Prior to this appointment, Phelps was executive general manager of the company’s northern region in Australia. He has more than 25 years of experience in the financial sector, including executive positions with RemServ, St George Banking Group and National Australia Bank.
 

Health/Medical

Bruce Cousins, executive vice-president and chief financial officer, Arbutus Biopharma Corp., is leaving the company but will remain available on a consulting basis. Koert VandenEnden, vice-president of finance, will serve as interim chief financial officer until a permanent replacement is found.
 

Hospitality/Tourism/Convention

Mauro Vescera has been appointed CEO at Museum of Vancouver. Vescera has worked in the non-profit sector for more than 20 years. Vescera joins the museum from the Italian Cultural Centre, where he was executive director. Vescera previously worked at Simon Fraser University as a major gifts fundraiser, and prior to that, spent 12 years with the Vancouver Foundation, where he managed several granting portfolios including arts and culture, environment, education, health, social enterprise and animal welfare. Vescera currently sits on the board of the Jim Green Foundation.
 

Human Resources

Jason Billard and Phil Mullen have recently joined Morneau Shepell’s Vancouver office. Billard rejoins the firm as partner and B.C. region leader. Billard has more than 20 years of industry experience with national and global human resources consulting and administration firms. Mullen, a consulting pension actuary specializing in pension risk management, has held a number of senior leadership roles in Europe, the U.S. and Canada and has more than 15 years of experience with two global consulting firms. Mullen’s new role is that of partner and retirement solutions leader for Western Canada.
 

Legal

Natalia Tzemis has joined Harper Grey LLP as an associate, practising in construction, insurance and professional regulation. Tzemis was previously with Eyford Macauley Shaw & Padmanabhan LLP in Vancouver.
 

Non-Profit

'Lyn Anglin, chief scientific officer and vice-president, environmental affairs, Imperial Metals Corp., has been appointed chair of the board of directors of the Association for Mineral Exploration. Kendra Johnston of Independence Gold Corp. and Rob McLeod of IDM Mining Ltd. have been appointed vice-chairs.

Margaret Buttner has joined the Pacific Salmon Foundation as manager of planned and annual giving. She was previously associate director for the Vancouver Public Library (VPL) Foundation, part of the team raising capital funds for expansion of VPL’s central library.
 

Resources

Martino De Ciccio, vice-president, strategy and investor relations, Endeavour Mining, has been appointed to the board of directors at Northisle Copper and Gold Inc. Prior to joining Endeavour, he held the position of strategy and business development manager at La Mancha Resources.

Gerald (Jerry) Trent, managing director and head of global markets and investment banking, Sberbank Europe, has been appointed to the advisory board of Stamper Oil & Gas Corp., focusing on business development and financing activities. Trent resides in Vienna, Austria, and has more than 15 years of expertise, specializing in investment banking with private and public equities.

Vanessa Pickering has been appointed manager of corporate communications and development at IDM Mining Ltd. Pickering has more than 14 years of experience in the exploration and mining industry with a focus on northern projects and most recently worked in corporate communications with the executive team of ATAC Resources Ltd.

Glenda Kelly, a communications and investor relations consultant, has been appointed to the board of directors at Pedro Resources Ltd. Kelly fills the vacancy created by John McCleery, who has resigned as a director of the company. The board now consists of Larry Talbot, Brian Murray, Chris Hopkins and Kelly.
 

Technology

Aslam K. Nathoo has been appointed vice-president of operations at Foresight Cleantech Accelerator, which helps startups focusing on clean tech, green tech and hard tech grow from concept to commercialization. With 20 years of helping companies build, market and sell innovative products, Nathoo’s background includes leadership with companies ranging from early stage startups to Sun, Oracle and SAP. Most recently, he has been an executive-in-residence for the Wavefront Accelerator in Vancouver.
 

Hats Off

Business in Vancouver welcomes submissions from local small businesses and large corporations alike that demonstrate examples of corporate philanthropy and community involvement in the Vancouver area. High-resolution images are also welcome.

The Scotiabank Feast of Fortune Gala, hosted by St. Paul’s Foundation, raised $900,115 for urgently needed equipment at Mount Saint Joseph Hospital. Funds raised will go toward the purchase of a state-of-the-art mammography machine. The event was attended by more than 650 guests and featured a live auction, food by award-winning chefs and live performances by pianist Robbie Akehurst, Motion Artistry dancers and Hong Kong pop star Pancy Lau.

Employees at Avison Young’s Vancouver office donated more than $5,300 to Children of the Street Society. The funds will help the society’s work to prevent the sexual exploitation and human trafficking of children and youth in B.C.   

Douglas College Alumni Association raised more than $167,000 from its inaugural alumni engagement campaign. The donations will help to fund student awards.   

The North Shore Community Foundation donated $6,000 to Big Sisters of BC Lower Mainland. These funds will help the organization match at-risk girls with supportive mentors through its one-to-one mentoring program. •
