Nelson Godfrey and Sean Jones have joined Gowling WLG’s Vancouver office as associates. Godfrey practises in the intellectual property group, with particular experience in contentious disputes in all areas of intellectual property, including trademarks, patents, copyright, industrial designs, misappropriation of confidential information and trade secrets and domain disputes. Godfrey is a strong proponent of alternative dispute resolution. Jones practises in the indigenous and environmental law groups. One of the main focuses of Jones’ practice is using his expertise to assist clients in obtaining and maintaining social licence. He advises a wide range of indigenous and industry clients on issues that include advocating environmental concerns and the rights of indigenous communities, and challenging approvals when necessary. Prior to becoming a lawyer, Jones had a career in communications, working for both industry and government.
Scott Howie has joined Harper Grey LLP as an associate with the business law group; he was previously with Edwards, Kenny & Bray LLP. Howie has experience in a wide range of commercial transactions and corporate matters, working with entrepreneurs and businesses in a variety of industries, from small and medium-sized enterprises to large, multinational corporations.

Timmins Gold Corp. is proposing to change its name to Alio Gold Inc. at its upcoming annual general meeting of shareholders. If approved, the company expects to begin trading on both the Toronto Stock Exchange and the New York Stock Exchange under the ticker ALO on May 16, and is also introducing a new management team. Arturo Bonillas will be stepping down as president and will continue as an adviser to the new team: Colette Rustad has been appointed executive vice-president and chief financial officer; Jose Hector Figueroa has been appointed vice-president of operations and will be leading the company’s revitalization of its San Francisco mine in northern Sonora, Mexico; Paul Hosford has been appointed vice-president of project development; Jason Gregg has been appointed executive vice-president of human resources; and Miguel Bonilla, formerly vice-president of finance and administration in Mexico, will undertake new responsibilities as country manager, Mexico.
Alan Edwards has been appointed director and chair of the board of Rise Gold Corp. Thomas Vehrs has also been appointed a director of the company. Edwards has more than 35 years of experience in the mining industry and was general manager for three major mining operations in the U.S. and senior vice-president of operations for Freeport Indonesia. Vehrs is an exploration geologist with more than 40 years of experience in the Americas; he has conducted and managed numerous exploration programs resulting in the discovery and delineation of major copper, gold and silver deposits. For the past 10 years, Vehrs was vice-president of exploration for Fortuna Silver Mines.
Fred Tejada has resigned as president, secretary and director of the company and Brad Scharfe has also resigned from the board of directors. Benjamin Mossman will remain as CEO and director and has been appointed president. Cale Thomas will remain as CFO and director and has also been appointed secretary of the company.

Silver Wheaton Corp. donated $10,000 to Coquitlam-based Children of the Street Society for its work to keep young people safe from all forms of sexual exploitation.
A Vancouver Island lighthouse preservation group has received the largest private donation to a lighthouse restoration project in Canada. The Sheringham Point Lighthouse Preservation Society has received a multi-year financial commitment totalling $550,000 from the Ontario-based Westaway Charitable Foundation. Sheringham Point Lighthouse, located 57 kilometres west of Victoria and one of 21 heritage lighthouses in B.C., is now owned by the society. There are 27 staffed lighthouse stations on the B.C. coast. Peter Westaway, president of the Westaway Foundation, lives in the Old Cut Lighthouse on Lake Erie, which he and his wife restored in 2000.
Members of the Gurdwara Dukh Nivaran Sahib Society donated $18,000 to Sophie’s Place Child and Youth Advocacy Centre. The funds were raised at a local event, In Remembrance of Sahibzaade, which celebrates two boys, aged six and nine, who were tortured and martyred more than 300 years ago. The brothers are among the most hallowed martyrs in Sikhism. Sophie’s Place Child and Youth Advocacy Centre allows children and youth up to age 18 to report their experience of physical, mental or sexual abuse in a child-friendly space where they feel safe and welcome. One in three Canadian girls, and one in six Canadian boys, are sexually abused before they reach adulthood.
Big Sisters of BC Lower Mainland raised $79,000 at its annual Big Sisters Spring Lunch, presented by Scotiabank. The annual celebration of mentoring raises funds to support Big Sisters’ three mentoring programs.
The BC Sports Hall of Fame formally inducted its 51st induction class at its annaul Banquet of Champions, presented by Vanguard Mortgage Investment Corp. The banquet raised a total of $150,000. •
