Catherine Warren has been appointed president at the Centre for Digital Media’s Great Northern Way Campus Trust, overseeing GNW Trust’s joint venture between the University of British Columbia, Simon Fraser University, Emily Carr University of Art + Design and the British Columbia Institute of Technology. Warren joins GNW Trust from the private sector as president of FanTrust Entertainment Strategies, a Vancouver-based digital media business development consultancy. Warren has lived and worked in Canada, the U.S., U.K. and Europe throughout her three-decade career in digital media.

Hospitality/Tourism/Convention

Martin L. Leclerc has been appointed general manager at the Westin Bayshore. Leclerc has more than 25 years of experience and most recently served as general manager for Marriott International’s St. Regis Tianjin and the Fairmont Nanjing in China. He has held key leadership roles at the Fairmont Empress in Victoria, Fairmont Chateau Laurier in Ottawa, Fairmont Queen Elizabeth in Montreal, Delta Pacific Resort in Richmond and Delta Vancouver Airport.

Legal

Kalev Anniko has joined Gehlen Dabbs as an associate working in insolvency, restructuring and commercial litigation. Anniko was previously with Koskie Minsky LLP in Toronto.

Sandra Abley has joined Harper Grey LLP as associate counsel with the firm’s wills and estates and business law groups. Abley provides comprehensive estate planning and wealth preservation guidance to individuals, families and business owners. She was previously with BMO Wealth Management in Vancouver.

Celeste Haldane has been appointed to a three-year term as chief commissioner of the BC Treaty Commission, the independent body responsible for overseeing treaty negotiations among the governments of Canada, British Columbia and First Nations in B.C.  Haldane, a member of the Sparrow family from Musqueam and who is Tsimshian through Metlakatla, is a practising lawyer.

Bryan Cox has been appointed president and CEO of the Mining Association of British Columbia (MABC), replacing Karina Briño, who is taking on a new industry assignment in her native Chile. Cox joined MABC as vice-president of corporate affairs in 2014. Prior to joining MABC, Cox spent seven years in the brewing industry in progressively senior roles including vice-president, Western Canada, at Canada’s National Brewers, where he was responsible for managing the regulatory and public affairs agenda for Canada’s largest brewers across the western provinces. He also spent several years with the Government of B.C. in senior roles.

Andy Randell has been appointed vice-president of exploration at StrikePoint Gold Inc. Randell, a Vancouver-based geologist with nearly 20 years of experience, founded Strata GeoData Services in 2014, then launched the Hive initiative, where graduate geologists are given the opportunity to work and be mentored on geological projects. Michael McPhie, executive chairman and co-founder of of IDM Mining Ltd., founder and CEO of FalKirk Resource Consultants Ltd. and managing director of JDS Gold Ltd., has been appointed to StrikePoint Gold’s board of directors. 

Technology

Rob Campbell has been appointed vice-president and chief commercial officer at Ballard Power Systems. Karim Kassam, vice-president, commercial, will be leaving Ballard at the end of May. Campbell was most recently president and CEO of SoloPower Systems Inc., a Portland, Oregon, manufacturer of photovoltaic technology. Prior to SoloPower, Campbell’s  career included: SVP of business development at Energy Conversion Devices and Solar Integrated Technologies in the U.S.; EVP of sales and marketing at Mississauga-based Hydrogenics; and other senior leadership roles at several construction and power generation companies in Ontario.

Hats Off

The Auxiliary to Burnaby Hospital donated $100,000 to Burnaby Hospital Foundation. The funds will purchase two electrocardiograph units with carts, three cardiology event recorders and an ultrasonic washer for Burnaby Hospital’s medical device reprocessing department.

RBC Foundation donated $20,000 to Langley Memorial Hospital Foundation. The funds have been used to purchase a cystoscope for the surgical program at Langley Memorial Hospital. The thin, telescope-like tube with a light and tiny camera attached is used to conduct a cystoscopy, a procedure that allows a physician to see the inside of the lower urinary tract to evaluate and diagnose conditions such as bladder cancer, chronic pelvic pain, urinary tract infections, urinary stones, incontinence and overactive bladder.

The Diamond Foundation donated a three-year pledge of $15,000 per year to Big Sisters of BC Lower Mainland. These funds will help the organization match vulnerable girls with supportive mentors through their Go Girls! Healthy Bodies, Healthy Minds group mentoring program.

Overseas Container Forwarding Inc. (OCF) has formed a multi-year charitable partnership with Habitat for Humanity Canada. OCF will donate $5 to Habitat’s Global Neighbours program for each and every less-than-container load consignment it handles between January 1, 2017, and December 31, 2018, with a commitment for a minimum donation of $100,000.•
