Members of the Greater Vancouver Home Builders’ Association (GVHBA) recently elected its 2016-17 executive committee: Darren Cranston (chair), vice-president, construction, Polygon Homes Ltd.; Larry Clay (first vice-chair), Clay Construction; Garett Wall (second vice-chair), Centra Windows; and Avtar Johl (secretary/treasurer), Platinum Group of Companies. Amit Patel and Sandy Kwan have been appointed business manager and operations manager, respectively, at Turner Construction’s Vancouver business unit. Patel has been with the company for 13 years and is one of the founding members of the western region of the company. Kwan has more than 17 years of experience working in diverse market segments including aviation, retail, stadiums and public projects.

Finance

Joe Markovitch, co-founder, Solly’s Bagelry, has been appointed business adviser at Wardell International. Markovitch has more than 20 years of experience in the retail and wholesale food industry, accomplishments in the marketing and advertising field and teaching experience at the post-secondary level.

Manufacturing

Jeff Demaniuk has been appointed head brewer at Fernie Brewing Co., stepping into the role in early 2017. Demaniuk was most recently head brewer at Trolley 5 in Calgary, and had previously worked for Village Brewing, Phillips and Big Rock. Demaniuk’s father, Gord Demaniuk, was Fernie Brewing’s brewmaster for the past five years, until his death in September 2016.

Non-profit

Richard Fruchter has been appointed CEO of the Jewish Family Service Agency (JFSA). Since January 2015, Fruchter has served as JFSA’s senior management consultant, helping to lead the organization during a period of transition.

Lindsey Fryett Jerke has been elected to Pacific Parklands Foundation’s board of directors. She joins board members David Pohl (president), Kevin O’Callaghan (vice-president), Joe Hargitt (executive director), Anastase Maragos (secretary), Sarah Marsh (treasurer), John Scott (past president), and directors Gaëtan Royer, Bryan Wallner, Richard Hankin, Ken Hicks, Steve Hnatiuk, Mel Kositsky, Ed O’Brien, Jackie Charles, Mark van der Zalm, Tamara Taggart and Mordehai Wosk, plus Metro Vancouver Regional Parks representatives Craig Hodge and Mitch Sokalski.

Resources

Rhylin Bailie has been appointed VP, investor relations, at Luna Gold Corp. For the past five years, she has managed all aspects of investor relations for a number of resource companies managed by J. Proust & Associates. Prior to her most recent role, Bailie was director of investor relations for NovaGold Resources.

Kathryn Johnson has been appointed CFO at Golden Predator Mining Corp. Prior to this appointment, Johnson was a financial reporting contractor with Goldcorp Inc. and prior to that, CFO at Rio Alto Mining, which was acquired by Tahoe Resources in 2015.

Sales/Marketing

Jim Bailey has been appointed VP, sales and marketing, at MyPakage, a North Vancouver-based menswear brand. Bailey most recently served as global chief marketing officer at Merrell Footwear and Apparel, and prior to that, served as president of Red Bull Canada Ltd.

Bill Cooper and Jana Madill have been appointed managing director and director, sponsorship sales and client service, respectively, at TwentyTen Group (TTG), the sponsorship marketing and sales firm. Cooper has been with TTG and the TwentyTen Corp. since its inception in 2010. Madill, a former consumer packaged goods brand executive, has worked with brands such as Molson Coors, Coca-Cola, Seventh Generation, Telus, Cirque du Soleil, the PNE and more.

Technology

Diarmuid O’Dea, formerly of Shaw Business, and Jason Mazepa, formerly of Zayo, have joined the commercial sales team at Urban Communications Inc. O’Dea’s past roles include positions with Government of Canada and Province of B.C., while Mazepa has held sales roles with Tranzeo Wireless, Chubb Edwards and Allstream.

Hats Off

Business in Vancouver welcomes submissions from local small businesses and large corporations alike that demonstrate examples of corporate philanthropy and community involvement in the Vancouver area. High-resolution images are also welcome.

The Constance Livingstone Friedman and Sydney Friedman Foundation donated $3.3 million to endow scholarships for students studying health at University of British Columbia (UBC). Constance and Sydney Friedman were the first appointments to UBC’s faculty of medicine in 1950, teaching the first graduating class of 1954. Together they established the department of anatomy, a department Sydney Friedman lead from 1950-1981. Constance taught and researched at UBC until her retirement in 1985. She and her husband published more than 200 papers together.

Mechanical Contractors Association of British Columbia (MCABC) donated $2,325 to the BC Cancer Foundation. The funds were raised at the MCABC Island Golf Tournament held in late August at Victoria’s Olympic View Golf Course.

TD Financial donated a $10,000 grant to Big Brothers of Greater Vancouver Foundation to support children through one-to-one mentoring in elementary schools across Greater Vancouver.

The Face the World Foundation recently donated a $15,000 grant to Big Sisters of BC Lower Mainland. The funds will help the organization match at-risk girls with a supportive mentor through its Big Sisters program in Vancouver. •
