Lisa Chu and Dean Hildebrand have been appointed dean, School of Health Sciences, and dean, School of Computing and Academic Studies, respectively, at British Columbia Institute of Technology (BCIT). Chu has more than 20 years of experience in academic and health-care leadership as well as leading transformation change, including the new Health Sciences Centre at BCIT. Hildebrand has 20 years of experience at BCIT and is a recognized forensic DNA expert who uses leading-edge technologies for humanitarian efforts.

Terry Duggan, president and CEO, British Columbia Maritime Employers Association (BCMEA), has announced his retirement effective March 31, 2019. Duggan has been with the BCMEA for 31 years. Mike Leonard, senior vice-president, employee relations, dispatch and corporate secretary, has been selected as Duggan’s successor. Leonard has 25 years of diverse experience and was recruited by the BCMEA in 2001.

Esther E.J. Sohn has joined Miller Thomson’s Vancouver office as an associate in the business law group. Sohn’s practice focuses on a broad range of finance and corporate transactions.
Sean Jones has joined MLT Aikins LLP’s Vancouver offices as an associate. Jones practises in Indigenous, environmental and regulatory law, with a focus on natural resource law. He has extensive experience in federal and provincial environmental assessments and advocating for the rights of Indigenous communities.

Mélanie Hennessey, vice-president, corporate communications, Novagold Resources Inc., and Joy McPhail, chair, Insurance Corp. of British Columbia, have been appointed to the board of directors at Covenant House, the privately funded organization that provides food, shelter, clothing and counselling to homeless and at-risk youth aged 16 to 24.

Russell Ball and Raymond Threlkeld have been appointed to Calibre Mining Corp.’s board of directors as executive chair and director, respectively. Concurrent with these appointments, John Reynolds has stepped down from the Calibre board and will be continuing with the company as a member of the new strategic advisory board. Darren Hall has also joined the company as a member of the strategic advisory board.
Pierre Beaudoin has been appointed chief operating officer at SilverCrest Metals Inc. Beaudoin is a precious-metals mining executive with more than 30 years of experience in diversified mining, mineral processing, design, mine construction and startup. Beaudoin started his career as a mineral processing professional and has spent more than 20 years working in processing plants in Canada, Australia, Chile, Peru and the U.S.
Tim Petterson has been appointed to Coro Mining Corp.’s board of directors. Petterson has investment banking experience across the natural resources sector and involvement with Canadian junior and mid-tier mining companies. He previously served as head of global mining research at both HSBC James Capel and ABN AMRO. He currently serves as managing director, mining, at Kepis & Pobe, a Vancouver-based natural resources investment company. Petterson is also a founder and executive chairman of Minera Cobre Corp.

The Surrey Board of Trade recently recognized seven winners at the 20th annual Surrey Business Excellence Awards, with presenting sponsors Business Development Bank of Canada and TD Bank, and media sponsors CKNW, GlobalTV and the Surrey Now-Leader newspaper. The winners are Philip Aguirre of Newton Business Improvement Association and Old Surrey Restaurant (Business Person of the Year); Symbiosis Pediatric Therapy Inc. (Business with One to 10 Employees); HealthTech Connex Inc. (Business with 11 to 40 Employees); Silver Icing Inc. (Business with 41+ Employees and Corporate Social Responsibility Recognition Award); Surrey Hospital Foundation (Not-for-Profit); and Maple Organics (New Business of the Year).
Scleroderma Association of British Columbia donated $52,556.53 to the St. Paul’s Foundation. The funds raised are proceeds from the seventh annual Scleroderma Ride for Research, Valemount’s second annual walk and Victoria’s inaugural walk. All proceeds enable local researchers to aid in the understanding of molecular pathways responsible for Raynaud’s, calcinosis, other forms of skin damage and lung damage in scleroderma.
Local Vancouver developer VivaGrand Developments donated $78,000 to Lord Roberts Elementary School to fund the expansion of the school’s community garden, a new computer lab with 30 MacBook Air laptops and outdoor equipment (soccer balls, Frisbees, etc.) for students.
Avison Young’s Vancouver staff participated in the firm’s fifth annual Global Day of Giving by painting, landscaping and building shelving and furniture at Kiwassa Neighbourhood House and Harbour View Daycare Centre. Tools were provided by Kerrisdale Equipment and food was donated by Freshii.
The Canadian Insurance Claims Managers Association donated $34,480 to the B.C. and Yukon chapter of Children’s Wish Foundation. Funds were raised through the association’s golf tournament in July.
The BC Gaming Facilities Charity Golf Tournament raised and donated $70,006 to the foundation.
Canucks for Kids Foundation donated $22,000 to the PALS Autism School. PALS is a non-profit, independent school in Vancouver providing year-round, individualized educational, therapeutic and recreational programs for children and adolescents with autism. •
