 Larry Tomei has been appointed executive vice-president and head of retail banking and wealth management at HSBC Bank Canada, succeeding Betty Miao, who is taking on a new role with HSBC in Asia. Tomei has joined HSBC after a 22-year career with CIBC, where he was most recently senior vice-president and headed up the President’s Choice Financial business.

Paola Ashton has been appointed VP, business and client development, at Glance Technologies Inc. Ashton has 16 years of client management and sales experience at startup and digital media companies, holding positions such as VP of sales at Agency Media and Blink Media Works, director of sales for Chalk Media and vice-president of David Chalk Inc., which was purchased by Research in Motion (now BlackBerry).

Hospitality/Tourism/Convention

Stewart Boyles has been appointed executive chef at Culinary Capers. Prior to this appointment, Boyles was chef de cuisine at Hawksworth; he has worked in fine-dining kitchens for the past 21 years.

Legal

Jared Enns has joined DLA Piper (Canada) LLP’s litigation, arbitration and investigations group as an associate. Enns previously worked at a Manitoba law firm, where he assisted senior counsel in conducting civil trials, labour arbitrations, contested motions, hearings before administrative tribunals as well as appeals before the Manitoba Court of Appeal.

Non-profit

Emily Griffiths-Hamilton and Richard Wood have joined the board of directors of the Nature Trust of British Columbia. Griffiths-Hamilton is an investment adviser at Hamilton & Associates of BMO Nesbitt Burns and is president and founder of Griffiths Hamilton Family Office Advisors. Wood founded Wood & Co., a central and eastern European investment bank, and now manages an investment fund specializing in those transitioning countries.

Resources

Nicholas Campbell has been appointed vice-president, business development, at SilverCrest Metals Inc. Campbell will initially be working part time and will maintain his full-time position as CFO for Goldsource Mines Inc.

Sales/Marketing

Carolina Wong has joined Outsource Marketing as a graphic designer. Wong has six years of experience as a graphic designer in the corporate sector.

Hats Off

Business in Vancouver welcomes submissions from local small businesses and large corporations alike that demonstrate examples of corporate philanthropy and community involvement in the Vancouver area. High-resolution images are also welcome.

RBC Royal Bank donated $40,000 to YWCA Crabtree Corner in support of food programs for low-income women and their children accessing support services in Vancouver’s Downtown Eastside. The community kitchen at Crabtree Corner serves over 30,000 meals per year to women and children living in poverty.

Attendees at Canuck Place Children’s Hospice’s 12th annual Gift of Time Gala, held at the Westin Bayshore Hotel, donated more than $1.1 million, which will support the critical care of B.C.’s children with life-threatening illnesses, and their families.

Recruiting services company Recruiting Social donated $10,000 to Surrey Schools’ learning centres. The funds will be used to provide scholarships and skills training for at-risk youth. The donation was facilitated by STAND Foundation, a Vancouver-based organization devoted to helping marginalized youth gain access to educational opportunities.

Sodexo North America pledged to donate $25,000 to Douglas College. The recent five-year pledge of $5,000 a year will bring the Sodexo scholarship fund to $33,000. •
