Barbara Troupin has been appointed chief medical officer and vice-president, clinical development, at Aquinox Pharmaceuticals, a clinical-stage pharmaceutical company discovering and developing targeted therapeutics in disease areas of  inflammation and immuno-oncology. For more than 18 years, Troupin has led clinical development and strategy at multiple clinical research institutions. She most recently served as senior vice-president and chief medical officer at Apricus Bioscience Inc.

Hospitality/Tourism/Convention

Max Borrowman has been appointed bar manager at Juniper Kitchen + Bar. Prior to this appointment, Borrowman was bar manager at Torafuku, and previously served at the Lobby Lounge at the Fairmont Pacific Rim Vancouver.

Legal

Avon Mersey has joined Singleton Urquhart as associate counsel. He has more than 40 years of experience in civil litigation, with a focus on insurance defence and product liability. Jessica Taylor has joined as an associate in the commercial and business litigation and workplace law group, and also has a practice in health law. Brendan Ward has brought his general practice to the firm, with a focus on commercial, construction and insurance litigation.

The firm also welcomes three new associates, Brendan Dawes, Kelly Ann Maw and Kyle Thompson, who completed their articles at the firm. Dawes will practice in civil litigation, immigration and workplace law; Maw will focus on civil fraud, insurance defence and commercial litigation; and Thompson will specialize in commercial and business litigation and real estate litigation.

Lana Okerlund, a faculty member of Simon Fraser University’s editing certificate program, has joined the partnership at West Coast Editorial Associates LLP. Okerlund has more than a decade of experience as a freelance editor, writer, indexer and trainer. Regular clients include Penguin Random House, Wiley Canada, Figure 1 Publishing, Page Two Strategies, Greystone Books and UBC Press.

Fatima Hassam has been appointed associate vice-president of development at the BC Cancer Foundation, leading the foundation’s development team and provincewide fundraising initiatives, as well as an organization-wide stewardship program. Prior to joining the foundation, Hassam led fundraising and major gift affairs for the faculty of medicine at University of British Columbia.

 Scott Norris has been appointed vice-president, commercial development, at Vancouver Airport Authority. Norris will be responsible for commercial services and cargo and business development. He has extensive experience in business development at airports in Australia and New Zealand.

Companies on the Move

Hayes Stewart Little & Co., a professional accounting and advisory firm with offices in Victoria, Duncan, Nanaimo and Port Alberni, has joined Grant Thornton LLP Canada, bringing a team of 47 staff, including seven partners and three principals, into the firm.

Hats Off

Business in Vancouver welcomes submissions from local small businesses and large corporations alike that demonstrate examples of corporate philanthropy and community involvement in the Vancouver area. High-resolution images are also welcome.

The Canadian Women’s Foundation has committed to donating $250,000 over five years to PLEA Community Services to mobilize an employment program. Through the program, youths will engage in a 10-week job placement with an employer mentor and take part in a variety of learning and skills-based training opportunities. Over five years, 100 youths will benefit from the program.

CDI College donated $4,200 to the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Canada. CDI has 24 campuses across the country; each campus spent the month of September raising money and awareness for cardiovascular health.

The B2Gold Big Brothers Golf Classic, which recently took place at Shaughnessy Golf and Country Club, raised $365,000 for the Big Brothers of Greater Vancouver Foundation. The funds will go towards mentoring programs for local children.

Concert Properties recently hosted its 19th annual golf tournament to raise funds for trades training programs across Canada. The 2016 tournament, held in Vancouver and Toronto, raised $350,000 for trades programs at British Columbia Institute of Technology and George Brown College, as well as for the Hammer Heads and STEP Up programs. •
