The Vancouver Regional Construction Association has announced its Silver Award winners for the 27th annual Awards of Excellence on October 21. One Silver Award winner from each category will be chosen as the Gold Award winner. In the general contractors over $40 million division: PCL Contructors Westcoast Inc. (Anvil Centre), BA Blacktop Ltd. (RBRC Combo Project) and Graham Construction and Engineering LP (YVR Airside Operations Building). In the $15 million to $40 million division: Haebler Construction Projects Inc. (Congregation Beth Israel Synagogue renovations and additions), Scott Construction Group (Mulgrave Senior School addition) and PCL Constructors Westcoast (Vancouver Aquarium expansion and revitalization project). Up to $15 million: Graham Infrastructure LP (Burrard Bridge bearing and expansion joint replacement), Mierau Contractors Ltd. (University of the Fraser Valley student centre) and Vancouver Pile Driving Ltd. (Vancouver Shipyards’ load-out pier).

Education

Ingrid Parent, university librarian, University of British Columbia, has been conferred an honorary fellowship by the International Federation of Library Associations and Institutions (IFLA). Parent is the third Canadian to be given this distinction; 30 fellows have been honoured since 1936. The honour is the association’s highest award and is conferred on the basis of merit. An active member of IFLA since 1995, Parent served as its first Canadian president from 2011 to 2013. She has been noted for engagement in promoting Canadian libraries in the international library community.

Health/Medical

Chuck Rifici and Adam Szweras have been appointed to the board of directors at Aurora Cannabis Inc. Rifici is the co-founder and former CEO of Tweed Marijuana Inc. and is currently a director of the Liberal Party of Canada. Prior to Tweed, he served as CFO of various technology firms such as Select Start Studios (acquired by Shopify), TekSavvy Solutions Inc. and Cybersurf Corp. Szweras has practised corporate and securities law since 1996 and since 2006 has been a partner at Fogler, Rubinoff LLP in Toronto, where he continues to practise corporate and securities law.

Legal

Peter Archibald, a partner in DLA Piper (Canada) LLP’s Vancouver office, has been appointed vice-chair of the BC Labour Relations Board (BCLRB). Archibald is an employment and labour lawyer with more than 40 years of legal experience. He acts as litigation counsel and as a spokesperson in collective bargaining on the management side. The BCLRB is an independent, administrative tribunal that deals with employment issues in unionized workplaces under provincial jurisdiction in B.C. Archibald’s three-year term begins on January 16, 2016.

George C. Hawley has been appointed senior technical adviser and chairman of Alabama Graphite Corp.’s technical advisory board.

Resources

Jane Bird has been appointed to Western Forest Products Inc.’s board of directors, and current director Daniel Nocente has been appointed independent lead director. Bird was most recently responsible for the Canada House renewal project in London, U.K., as an attaché with Canada’s Department of Foreign Affairs, International Trade and Development. She currently serves on the boards of Global Container Terminals Inc., BC Ferry Services Inc. and IBI Group Inc.

Braden Jensen has been appointed CFO at Copper Fox Metals Inc. Jensen has replaced Catherine Henderson, interim CFO. Jensen was recently appointed CFO of Carmax Mining Corp., in which Copper Fox holds 50.97% of the equity.

Antonio Arribas has been appointed a director at Auryn Resources Inc. Arribas has more than 20 years of experience in the resources industry across multiple companies, commodities and geographic regions.

Sales/Marketing

Julie Bevacqua has been appointed chief marketing officer at QuickMobile. Bevacqua has more than 18 years of enterprise marketing experience, most recently serving as chief marketing officer of Yocale Network Corp., a Vancouver-based software company she co-founded.

Hats Off

Business in Vancouver welcomes submissions from local small businesses and large corporations alike that demonstrate examples of corporate philanthropy and community involvement in the Vancouver area. High-resolution images are also welcome.

Coast Hotels donated $50,000 to the Salvation Army British Columbia division. Funds were raised at Coast Hotels’ 13th annual Shuhachi Naito Golf Classic in Coquitlam. A total of $72,000 was raised at the tournament; $22,000 was donated to the ALS Society of BC. The tournament is named after a former senior executive at Coast, who died of ALS last year.

Scotiabank donated $50,000 to Streetohome Foundation, a program that addresses the needs of homeless or at-risk youth with mental health and addiction issues.

Rona Home Centre on Barnet Highway in Coquitlam donated $956 to Crossroads Hospice Society through its charity popcorn sales program. Each month, Rona staff choose a charity to support – this is the third time Crossroads Hospice Society was selected.

First West Credit Union and its Envision Financial division donated $25,000 to Reach Child and Youth Development Society. First West and Envision have donated a total of $52,000 towards the Reach Building for Children Together campaign.

The Rotary Club of Vancouver donated $5,000 to the Jo Dickey Foundation. The funds will help the foundation grant financial assistance to mentally or physically challenged members of the community for items, services or events that will improve their quality of life.

Beckman Coulter Life Sciences donated US$2,500 to AIDS Vancouver. The funds will go to the charity’s health promotion program. •
