Martin Jobke has been appointed president of the Associated Engineering group of companies, effective January 1, 2018, succeeding Kerry Rudd, president and CEO, who will retain the role of CEO after the transition. Jobke joined the company in 1987 and has held roles of increasing responsibility, most recently vice-president and general manager of Associated Engineering’s B.C. operation.
Legal
Lando & Co. LLP, a Vancouver-based boutique law firm specializing in real estate, business law and finance, recently joined the Vancouver office of Gowling WLG. The legal team joining Gowling WLG includes Murray Braaten, Mark Ferbers, Richard Rabson, Paulina Kam, Barbara Wohl and Kenneth Howe.
Braaten served as Lando’s managing partner since 1987 and has joined Gowling WLG as a partner, acting primarily for lending institutions and commercial and residential real estate developers.
Ferbers has also joined as a partner and has broad expertise in real estate and general business law, including commercial leasing, finance, construction and development. Rabson has joined as counsel; he has extensive experience in the areas of corporate commercial and real estate law, including developing a number of international clients, and has represented clients in complex international transactions with various governments including with officials in Korea and Singapore.
Kam and Wohl have both joined Gowling WLG as senior associates. Kam has experience in real estate development (including master-planned communities, air space parcel subdivisions, multi-family, residential, commercial and mixed-use developments), commercial lending, commercial and investment real estate, general business law, and commercial and residential conveyancing.
Wohl has experience in corporate commercial law, working with both domestic and international clients on multi-jurisdictional secured finance and business merger transactions and complex corporate reorganizations involving entities including limited partnerships, unlimited liability companies and trusts.
Howe has joined Gowling WLG as an associate, and his practice focuses on commercial real estate transactions and commercial law; he regularly advises clients on a broad range of matters including acquisitions and dispositions, leasing, subdivision, development and acquisition and project financing.
Technology
Anthony Fernandez and Stephen Thurley have joined ACL, a Vancouver-based software provider helping governments and large companies quantify risk, eradicate fraud and optimize performance, as director of data-driven GRC (governance, risk management and compliance) consulting and managing director of the Asia-Pacific region, respectively. Fernandez, a certified public accountant, was most recently associate director of business risk and consulting at Mazars. Thurley has 26 years of software experience, most recently in sales leadership roles at SAI Global and Thomson Reuters.
Fred Vandenberg has been appointed chief executive officer at Destiny Media Technologies Inc. Vandenberg has been with the company for 12 years, previously serving as the company’s chief financial officer.
David Kanuch and Matt Miles have been appointed vice-president, engineering, and vice-president, business development, respectively, at General Fusion. These appointments support General Fusion’s goal of developing the world’s first commercially viable fusion power plant. Kanuch will be responsible for overseeing the formal design engineering process for the company’s new facility, drawing on 30 years of experience in managing projects, site modifications, engineering, design and test programs across nuclear and oil and gas industries. Kanuch previously served as director of design engineering optimization for Babcock & Wilcox’s (B&W) Generation mPower advanced reactor. Miles has also previously held roles at B&W, directing international business development and strategic marketing for the energy multinational across industrial, environmental and nuclear divisions.

Shoppers Drug Mart donated $5,000 to Big Sisters of BC Lower Mainland’s Go Girls! program. These funds will match at-risk girls with a supportive mentor to promote physical activity, balanced eating and self-esteem.
Connor, Clark and Lunn is the lead donor for Streetohome Foundation’s new employment initiative, which will match formerly homeless or at-risk-of-homelessness individuals with employment opportunities that meet their intention to move on with their lives. The company donated $50,000 over two years for the program.
Employees at RBC’s Coquitlam Town Centre branch facilitated the donation of $1,000 to Crossroads Hospice Society for their participation in the 2017 Coquitlam Teddy Bear Picnic Parade. The donation is a result of RBC’s Day of Service program, which supports employees who volunteer in the community through a donation to a charity of their choice.
Basetwo Media donated $500 to Joel Law, a video production student at British Columbia Institute of Technology (BCIT). Law is the first recipient of the Luke Fahrmann Memorial Award. The award is intended to honour the life and memory of Luke Fahrmann, a member of Basetwo Media’s team and recent BCIT graduate who died in March 2017.
ZLC Foundation donated $79,000 to Coast Mental Health Foundation. The foundation provides education, employment, housing and support for people with mental illness. •
