Development/Construction

Megan Chalmers has joined ZGF Cotter Architects. Chalmers, a registered architect in both B.C. and the state of Washington, has more than 10 years of experience in design and construction drawings for a variety of sectors, including residential, civic and cultural facilities.

Education

Robin Hemmingsen has been appointed president of LaSalle College Vancouver. Hemmingsen was most recently managing director of the Autism Society of British Columbia. Prior to that, she has held positions such as dean of business at the British Columbia Institute of Technology, program head and then chair in business and technology programs at both Centennial College and Seneca College in Toronto, and also served as director of finance at Nabisco Brands Inc.

Finance

Ken Bancroft , former chief investment officer, Alberta Teachers’ Retirement Fund; Ron Kruschen, former principal, API Asset Performance Inc.; and Terry Salman, former president and CEO, Salman Partners Inc., have been appointed to the advisory board of Pathfinder Asset Management Ltd., a boutique investment firm.

Manufacturing

Burcon NutraScience Corp., developer of functional, renewable plant-based proteins, has announced the election of its board of directors: Alan Chan, Rosanna Chau, J. Douglas Gilpin, Matthew Hall, Peter H. Kappel, David Lorne, John Tyrrell and Allan Yap.

Real estate

Daniel Lee and Jason Schouten have been appointed principals at Avison Young. Lee and Schouten bring 10 and 12 years of retail real estate experience, respectively, to the firm. They were most recently principals with Northwest Atlantic (NWA) in Vancouver. Also joining Avison Young from NWA are Michael Hodge as a vice-president, and Connor Eden and Teresa Pham as associates.

Teresa Neto has been appointed CFO at Pure Industrial Real Estate Trust, replacing Francis Tam. Neto most recently served as CFO of Northwest Healthcare Properties REIT, and prior to that, was CFO and VP of financial reporting at Real Property Association of Canada.

Paul G. Haggis has been appointed to Pure Industrial Real Estate Trust’s board of trustees. Haggis holds many governance positions, such as chair of Alberta Enterprise, a venture capital initiative of the Alberta government; director and chair, audit committee, Advantage Oil & Gas Ltd. of Calgary; adviser to and former chair of Insurance Corporation of British Columbia’s investment committee; and board member of University of British Columbia’s Investment Management Trust.

Stephen Harper, former prime minister, has been appointed to the board of directors of Colliers International Group Inc.

Resources

Ramon Davila has resigned from First Majestic Silver Corp.’s board of directors. Davila served as director of the company since 2004 and was also its chief operating officer until July 2014.

Mikael Ranggard, senior legal adviser, Woxna Graphite AB, has been appointed as an independent director and member of Leading Edge Materials Corp.’s audit committee. Michael Hudson, founding president, CEO and director of Mason Resources Ltd., has been appointed as non-executive chairman of the board for Leading Edge Materials Corp.

Technology

Laurie Wallace, a Vancouver-based senior executive and strategist, has joined the board of directors at Calgary Scientific Ltd., a provider of mobile software solutions for the health care, manufacturing and enterprise computing markets. Wallace has guided several software companies through growth cycles and successful exit strategies, including Recon Instruments, which was sold to Intel, and Partnerpedia, sold to BMC Software. 

Hats Off

Business in Vancouver welcomes submissions from local small businesses and large corporations alike that demonstrate examples of corporate philanthropy and community involvement in the Vancouver area. High-resolution images are also welcome.

Telus donated $7,575 to BC Women’s Hospital + Health Centre Foundation, in support of the foundation’s campaign to end cervical cancer. 

The 1988 Foundation donated $5,000 to Big Sisters of BC Lower Mainland. The funds will help the organization match girls on its waitlist with a supportive Big Sister mentor.

Participants in the KidSafe Project Society’s annual BPS Wealth Management at CIBC Wood Gundy Golf for KidSafe tournament raised $161,000, including a $45,000 donation from BPS Wealth Management at CIBC Wood Gundy. In addition to BPS Wealth Management, the tournament had 35 other sponsors representing a diverse group of Vancouver’s business community, including groups from the financial, legal, tech and real estate industries. The KidSafe Project Society provides free, camp-style programming to 450 of Vancouver’s inner city children during summer, winter and spring breaks.

100WomenVan donated $6,500 to Women Against Violence Against Women (WAVAW) Rape Crisis Centre. The funds will support 130 hours of counselling for women who have been victimized by sexual assault.

Beedie Development Group is the 2016 inductee into the Burnaby Business Hall of Fame. The award is bestowed jointly by the Burnaby Board of Trade and the City of Burnaby each year to a widely recognized, Burnaby-based business that has demonstrated business success over many years and has had a positive and significant impact on the community. The Beedie Development Group will be formally inducted at the Burnaby Business Hall of Fame and Nominees’ Luncheon being held at the Hilton Vancouver Metrotown Hotel on October 13.

RBC donated $40,000 to the KidStart program, a one-to-one volunteer mentoring program for children and youth aged 6-19 who reside in the Lower Mainland. RBC has been supporting this program since 2008 and has given more than $280,000 to date. •
