Carlos Medeiros has been appointed vice-president, credit risk, at Mogo Finance Technology Inc. Medeiros, a data scientist, has 20 years of experience in progressively senior credit risk positions with large corporations. Most recently, he served as chief risk officer for SNAP Financial, and he previously served as head, financial risk management, at HSBC Finance.

Tammy Vigue has joined Porchlight Financial as a CAP (capital accumulation plan) consultant and will be primarily responsible for new business development within the firm’s CAP consulting practice. Vigue has more than 12 years of experience in the pension and investment industries, most recently as a client relationship executive within Sun Life Financial’s group retirement services office in Vancouver. Vigue is also a certified retirement coach, familiar with many non-financial aspects of retirement planning.

Human Resources

Mark Jackson, managing director, Western Canada, Hay Group, is retiring at the end of September after 26 years with the company. Upon Jackson’s retirement, Rachel O’Connor will assume the leadership for Hay Group in Western Canada. O’Connor joined Hay Group in its Vancouver office in 2009 and will lead a team of consultants from across Western Canada.

Legal

Alain Saint-Onge recently joined Farris, Vaughan, Wills & Murphy LLP as an associate in the labour and employment group. Prior to joining Farris, Saint-Onge articled at a national law firm in Vancouver.

Leah George-Wilson and Mark Youden have joined Gowlings’ Vancouver office as associates. George-Wilson, former chief of the Tsleil-Waututh Nation, will practise aboriginal law. George-Wilson has served as co-chair of the First Nations Summit since 2004, and is familiar with the treaty process and the challenges it presents to First Nations. Youden will be practising in the firm’s environmental and aboriginal law groups. Youden completed his articles with a specialist environmental law firm in Toronto.

Chilliwack-based notary Scott Simpson received the Presidential Award of Excellence from the Society of Notaries Public of BC. The award is not awarded with any time specificity; it is awarded to notaries who demonstrate exemplary service and commitment to their communities and the notary profession. The last time it was awarded was in 2012.

Public

Neil Belot has been appointed chief brand officer at Aurora Cannabis Inc. Previously, Belot served on the board of directors for patient-focused national charity Canadian Transverse Myelitis Association, was a public servant in several ministries within the Ontario government and was the gas portfolio and energy services manager with Housing Services Corp.

Kevin Puil, managing partner, RIVI Capital, and Arthur Ratte, technical advisory board member, Redhawk Resources, have been appointed to the board of directors of Redhawk Resources. Puil is a former fund manager and analyst with over 18 years of experience managing natural resource investments. Ratte has more than 30 years of mineral processing experience.

Sales/Marketing

Ron Cann has been appointed SVP, products and qualitative solutions, at Insights West. Cann most recently served as VP of marketing and communications at Qtrade Financial Group, a national brokerage firm, and has held various senior marketing roles in organizations such as Central 1, Karo Group and North Shore Credit Union.

Romila Barryman and Esther Tung have recently joined Yulu PR as senior account executive, and account co-ordinator and community cultivator, respectively. Sarah Brykajlo continues at Yulu as a senior account executive. Barryman has experience in tech journalism as a founder of the tech section at Vancity Buzz, a writer at BetaKit’s West Coast team and founder of Textbook Media Inc. Tung has a background in digital media, cryptocurrency and tech startups. Before joining Yulu PR, Brykajlo held positions at Edelman, Pacific Blue Cross and RBC.

Transportation

Paul Thomas, Matt Boydston and Billy Garton have joined Seaspan ULC’s corporate executive team. Thomas, now VP, engineering, Vancouver Shipyards (VSY), previously joined VSY in 2013 as director, ship construction. Prior to that, Thomas spent the majority of his 20-year career at BAE Systems in Melbourne, Australia. Boydston, now VP, finance, Seaspan Shipyards, has served as controller at Seaspan Shipyards since 2006; he has more than 20 years of financial leadership experience in industrial manufacturing settings. Effective October 1, Garton will assume the role of general counsel for Seaspan ULC. For the past 25 years, Garton has worked at Seaspan’s legal partner, Bull Housser, on a number of important Seaspan projects, including playing a key role in the company’s National Shipbuilding Procurement Strategy contracting efforts.

Hats Off

Business in Vancouver welcomes submissions from local small businesses and large corporations alike that demonstrate examples of corporate philanthropy and community involvement in the Vancouver area. High-resolution images are also welcome.

Telus and its employees donated $8,545.08 to the Burnaby Hospital Foundation. The funds will be directed to highest-priority needs at Burnaby Hospital.

Concert Properties hosted its annual charity golf tournaments in Vancouver and Toronto and raised $300,000 for trades training across Canada. Since 2002, Concert has been consistently fundraising for programs that seek to increase the supply of skilled tradespeople.

TB Vets Charitable Foundation is hosting its 2015 BreatheBC Challenge Awards reception on September 30 at the Deeley Motorcycle Exhibition. TB Vets will be presenting 18 awards to B.C. hospitals and health centres for respiratory equipment and programs, as well as donating $589,583 to the hospitals.

Fusion Projects donated $53,177 to the build-out of Family Services of the North Shore’s new building in North Vancouver earlier this year. An additional $40,000 was donated from Fusion Projects’ vendors and partners Avid Contracting, Feature Millwork, Beatty Floors, Westcan Painting, BC Comfort Ltd., Priority Fire Systems, Sasco Contractors, Blackburn Young Office Solutionsand MCM Interiors.•
