A new research project will test how well a year-old mental health standard for the workplace performs, in hopes that it will become widely adopted across Canada.

Twenty-five companies, including Bell Media and Great West Life, will take part in the three-year study. The National Standard for Psychological Health and Safety in the Workplace gives employers tools to promote mental health and prevent psychological harm.

It has been estimated that mental health issues cost the Canadian economy $51 billion a year.

“The Standard is aimed at preventing mental injury, reducing absenteeism, and supporting a healthier, more competitive workforce," said Louise Bradley, president and CEO of the Mental Health Commission of Canada, in a statement.

According to the Mental Health Commission, on any given week 500,000 Canadians do not go to work because of mental illness, and over 30% of disability claims and 70% of disability costs are related to mental health.
