Vancouver law firm Branch MacMaster LLP has won the Canadian Bar Association, BC Branch (CBABC) award for work-life balance, the association announced yesterday evening.

The award was established to recognize law firms, organizations or lawyers who promote wellness in the practice of law.

“Branch MacMaster LLP demonstrates creativity and innovation in the workplace through a number of no-cost strategies and principles,” said CBABC president Kerry Simmons. “Lawyers who seek work-life integration can learn much from this firm’s example.”

The firm was recognized for its innovative work with no-cost strategies that include:

  • associate retention through set bottom-line goals;
  • regular status reports and pro-rata incentives; and
  • freedom for staff to work where and when they want.

The association also recognized Vancouver lawyers Eric Gottardi of the firm Peck & Company with the President’s Medal for his work in the areas of criminal justice reform in B.C. and Canada and Donald Sorochan, QC of Miller Thomson LLP, with the Harry Rankin QC Pro Bono Award for pro-bono advocacy over his 40-year career.
