A Vancouver Starbucks outlet sitting just off the entrance to Granville Island has been honoured for its hiring practices by the B.C. Coalition of People with Disabilities (BCCPD).
The coffee chain has recruited seven employees across Metro Vancouver through the posAbilities Employment Service, but it was Starbucks employee Robert Navalta's nomination that nabbed the award for the 1500 West Second Ave. branch.
This is the first year the BCCPD has recognized an employer for such an award, which was handed out April 9.
BCCPD executive director Jane Dyson said her organization wanted to honour Starbucks for finding an innovative approach toward hiring Novalta.
They created the position of cafe attendant specifically for him, allowing him to greet customers, clear tables and stock condiments during peak hours.
"I am so happy that Starbucks won this award, it's a really great company to work for. I hope to work here for a very, very long time," Navalta said in a statement.
Starbucks store manager Jon Dodge described his employee as someone who "picks up the pieces when we all fall down."
The BCCPD also have an honourary mention to Vancouver's Progressive Intercultural Community Services.
