The value of building permits was up in October in the city, the province and Canada-wide, according to Statistics Canada data released December 5.
Building permits in Vancouver increased 6.1% from $518 million in September to $549 million. This is an increase of 19.1% compared with one year prior, which saw total building permits of $461 million.
Across British Columbia, permits grew by 0.9% to $852 million in October from $844 million in September. This was due to a 5.8% jump in residential construction, offset by a 6.9% drop in non-residential construction. The province saw gains in construction intentions and building permits for single-family dwellings.
Canada-wide, building permits grew 7.4% to $7.2 billion from $6.7 billion in September, due in large part to increased construction intentions in residential and non-residential construction in Ontario. Year-over-year, building permits were down 6.2%.
The biggest gains in October were found in:
- Saskatchewan – up 26.2%;
- Ontario – up 20.3%; and
- Manitoba – up 14.9%.
