Housing starts were down across the country in April and are expected to decline further this year, according to the Conference Board of Canada.
Only six out of 28 metropolitan areas posted a year-over-year increase, whereas more than half are posting negative short-term projections. Cities in central and Atlantic Canada are more likely to have a negative outlook, however three western cities – Vancouver, Regina and Saskatoon – are also down in both the short and long term.
Winnipeg had the biggest year-over-year increase. Abbotsford joined Thunder Bay, Hamilton, Sudbury and Moncton with the largest declines.
