Q&A with Troy Abromaitis, Forty Under 40 Winner 2020; Director of development, Bucci Developments, Age 37

Who or what is responsible for your work ethic?

Throughout my career, I was fortunate to have the support of my family, colleagues and mentors. Their support has been essential in my career development and as a result, I continue to look for ways to help mentor and support the next generation of young professionals. I strongly believe that you get out of a career what you give back to your community.

What is your guilty pleasure?

Tiramisu or crème brûlée.

What is the best book you would recommend?

Blue Ocean Strategy or The Hard Thing About Hard Things.

Now that you’re entering your 40s, what goals have you set for yourself?

See the world. Learn another language. Get more involved in politics.

Choose one of these five childhood career dreams: rock star, star athlete, prime minister, astronaut, detective.

Prime minister.

Name your happiest place.

Vacation on a tropical beach.

What was your toughest business or professional decision?

Stepping back from volunteering to spend more time with family.

Advice you would give your 20-year-old self?

If you are fortunate enough to find success, it is your opportunity to send the ladder down and lift others up as we climb. Giving back is the right thing to do.

What is your best habit?

I am relentlessly curious. I also look at problems as opportunities, not challenges.

Tell us one improbable fact about yourself.

I am a business professional by day and professional student by night.

Best piece of advice ever received?

Think long term and strive to contribute to your community.

What career highlight are you most proud of?

Working on one of the largest masterplanned communities in Surrey and being the president of the Real Estate Institute of British Columbia.
