A new study rates rental affordability and availability in Vancouver as "critical" and the most severe in the province

A B.C. housing advocacy organization is rating Vancouver’s rental housing situation as "critical" and worse than any other community in the province.

The BC Non-Profit Housing Association used data from Statistics Canada to rate regions across the province on areas like cost, affordability and overcrowding. Click here to view an interactive map.

Vancouver renters pay an average of $1,054, including utilities. On average, renters spent 23% of their incomes on rent, but 45% spent more than 30% while 24% were spending more than half their incomes on rent.

Kelowna, Penticton and Nanaimo were also rated poorly for housing affordability. Half of the renters in the Kelowna area spend over 30% of their income on housing, while 25% spend half of their earnings to put a roof over their heads.

Vancouver scored highly on all measures (cost, affordability, overspending, income gap (the gap between what people pay for housing and what they would need to make to bring the ratio down to 30%), overcrowding and bedroom shortfall.
