The B.C. government isn’t happy with the answers it’s getting from Kinder Morgan and has requested deadline extension for the next round of intervener information requests.

Victoria filed a motion with the National Energy Board (NED) on July 4 in a bid to dig up more information on the Houston-based energy giant’s proposed Trans Mountain pipeline project running between Alberta and the Lower Mainland.

The Ministry of the Environment said it had sent more than 70 information requests to the American company regarding maritime and land-based spill response efforts.

The motion filed with the NEB stated Kinder Morgan declined to provide the province with a copy of its emergency response program on the grounds information contained within it was “of a confidential and sensitive nature.”

The motion stated it’s in the NEB’s hands to weigh Kinder Morgan’s desire for confidentiality against the public’s interest in disclosure.

The province is asking that the deadline for the second round of intervener information requests be extended.

The deadline is currently set for Sept. 11 but Victoria said it would be impossible to file a meaningful follow-up request for more information by that time even if Kinder Morgan immediately provided satisfactory responses to the initial questions.
