Calgary-based Enbridge (TSX:ENB) is reducing its workforce by approximately 5% as part of an enterprise-wide organizational review, the company said October 19.

Approximately 530 positions were affected, including about 370 in Canada and about 160 in the U.S.

In announcing the layoffs, Enbridge said they were the result of an organizational review launched in the first quarter of 2016.

“It is focused on what we need to do to achieve our strategy of growth and diversification, enhance our competitiveness, and allow us to capitalize on opportunities now and into the future,” said the company.

It added that throughout the process Enbridge is committed to treating people fairly and with respect, providing support to those leaving the company, as well as those who remain.

Enbridge said the job cuts are not related to its planned $37 billion purchase of Spectra Energy Corp., which will make the combined entity the largest energy infrastructure company in North America.

In September, Spectra announced its plans to have dozens of kilometers of pipeline in the ground in Northeast British Columbia by the time the acquisition is completed.
