Federal regulators have given the green light to Triton LNG’s application for a 25-year licence to export liquefied natural gas from the B.C. coast.

The National Energy Board approved the licence April 16, allowing Triton to go foeward with plans to build an LNG facility in either Kitimat or Prince Rupert.

Although the export licence has been granted, further approvals are still needed before construction can begin on a liquefaction terminal in one of those two West Coast communities.

B.C. Natural Gas Development Minister Rich Coleman said in a statement the approval would give the province the chance to provide energy to Asia.

“The approval of Triton LNG's export licence by the National Energy Board is another concrete example of the progress being made to build a liquefied natural gas (LNG) export industry in our province,” he said.
