FortisBC is partnering up with the Canadian division of U.S. construction giant Bechtel to help expand its liquefied natural gas (LNG) facility in the Lower Mainland.

Bechtel is scheduled to break ground on the $400-million project in September and finish construction in 2016, the utilities company announced July 28.

The Tilbury Island facility in Delta has been in operation since 1971 and about 150 skilled workers are expected to contribute to the expansion project over the next two years.

The expanded facility will add 1.1 million gigajoules of LNG storage and 34,000 gigajoules of liquefaction capacity per day.

The Tilbury Island plant currently has the capacity to liquefy 5,000 gigajoules of natural gas per day.
