The president and CEO of the Association for Mineral Exploration British Columbia (AME BC) has announced he is stepping down after more than eight years at the organization’s helm.

Dirom said he believes the AME’s purpose—promoting and protecting the province’s mineral exploration and development industry—remains “vitally important.”

“Based on a number of positive indicators, the global mineral exploration and development industry is emerging from one of the longest and deepest downturns in history,” Dirom said.

“I am optimistic that the worst of the storm is now behind us and that AME members will be moving forward to diligently explore and find exciting new discoveries, develop projects judiciously and do their best to safely supply the world with the metals, minerals and steel-making coal that we all need and use on a daily basis.”

Gavin Dirom will leave the position in the spring, but his next steps remain unclear.

“He has not accepted a position elsewhere,” Jonathan Buchanan, the AME’s director of information and public affairs, told Business in Vancouver.

“He is pursuing other career opportunities.”

The AME has begun looking for Dirom’s replacement and says a posting for the role will soon be available on its website. Dirom will work with the organization during the transition period.

Before he joined the AME, Dirom was vice-president of environment, health and safety at the Mining Association of British Columbia. He also worked with Natural Resources Canada as a senior policy adviser.
