Well licences have nearly doubled in B.C. this year versus last, driven by improving gas prices and companies looking to bolster reserves for long-term LNG supply contracts

The provincial government sold 19 plots of land in northeast B.C. for $6.39 million at its monthly natural gas and petroleum sale on July 24.

The 19 parcels totalled 10,509 hectares.

Drilling licences for two parcels of land in the Sunset Prairie area sold for more than $2.47 million. Sunset Prairie is located about 25 kilometres south of Taylor.

In the Nig Creek area, located about 100 kilometres northwest of Fort St. John, a lease on a parcel of land sold for $480,000.

Leases approved on land sold at the sale give a company the right to produce natural gas and petroleum. Leases can be for five or 10 years, depending on the location.

Drilling licences allow companies to explore for natural gas and petroleum. Licences can be for three, four or five years, also depending on location.

If the exploration from a drilling licence yields natural gas or petroleum reserves, a lease from the government can be applied for.
