Canadian miners are upping their sustainability practices, according to the Mining Association of Canada (MAC)’s eighth annual Towards Sustainable Mining Progress Report, released this morning.
The report looks at MAC members’ 2011 performance in the areas of communities and people, environmental footprint and energy efficiency. MAC members are required to participate in the report.
The report found that:
- the number of MAC members’ mines with a comprehensive reporting system for energy use has increased 20% over the last year to 64%;
- more than 80% of the mines have assigned accountability and responsibility for tailings management to the company’s CEO or COO; and
- more than 90% of the mines have strong engagement practices within their communities.
Pierre Graton, MAC’s president and CEO, said the report findings show that the industry is commited to responsible resource development.
“Over the last eight years, we have seen notable progress in the way our members engage with communities and manage their environmental risks as they work to meet society’s needs for minerals and metals,” he said.
