A worker at a mine owned by Vancouver’s Goldcorp (TSX:G) has died after being trapped underground last week following an accident.

The worker at the Marlin mine in Guatemala went missing following a “fall-of-rock” incident Thursday (April 14), the company said in a statement.

First responders reached the worker Sunday (April 17) but by then the worker had already perished, according to Goldcorp.

No other employees were injured in the accident and operations at the mine remain suspended while an investigation is underway.

A spokeswoman from Goldcorp said the surface operations would resume within one or two days while underground operations would be gradually phased in as the mine is inspected and cleared.

"All of us at Goldcorp are deeply saddened by this tragic news," Goldcorp CEO David Garofalo said in a prepared statement.

"Our highest priority is the health and safety of our employees. On behalf of all of us at Goldcorp, I wish to extend my prayers and condolences to the worker's family, friends and to his co-workers at Marlin."

The worker was an assistant underground mining operator who had been employed at the mine since 2011, according to a Goldcorp spokeswoman.

The Marlin mine has been plagued by controversy over the past decade, with concerns over its environmental impact and reports of violence against those opposing its development.

Earlier this year, workers also died at a Mexican mine owned by Vancouver’s Avino Silver and Gold Mines.
