Janet Holder, the leader of the Northern Gateway Pipelines Project and executive vice-president, Western access, for Enbridge Inc. (TSX:ENB), will be retiring December 31, 2014.

Holder has held the role since 2011. Prior to this position, she was president, gas distribution, from 2008 to 2011. She has been with Enbridge since 1992.

“In leading the Northern Gateway team, Janet guided one of the most difficult projects in Canadian history through to regulatory approval,” said Enbridge president and CEO Al Monaco, referring to the approval of the project, subject to 209 conditions, by the Joint Review Panel of the National Energy Board (NEB) in December 2013.

John Carruthers, president of Northern Gateway Pipelines, will take over as leader of the project.

The project has faced several major hurdles, in spite of the NEB approval, including strong opposition by environmentalists and First Nations Groups. In September, Enbridge announced that it no longer expects the project to be finished by 2018.

Holder will still work with Northern Gateway as a consultant after her retirement.
