Hoping to gain support from British Columbians, Enbridge Inc.'s Northern Gateway Pipelines has signed a new memorandum of understanding (MOU) with trade unions representing pipeline construction workers.

The agreement ensures workers and their families directly benefit from the project with good jobs, good paycheques and training opportunities, says a Pipe Line Contractors of Canada (PLCAC) press release.

The trade union signatories to the MOU with Northern Gateway and the Pipe Line Contractors Association of Canada are:

  • the Labourers' International Union of North America;
  • the International Union of Operating Engineers;
  • the International Brotherhood of Teamsters; and
  • the United Association of Journeymen and Apprentices of the Plumbing and Pipefitting Industry of the United States and Canada.

The proposed project, designed to provide an Asian market for Alberta oil, would end at Kitimat on B.C.'s west coast, where residents recently voted against the pipeline.
