U.S. regulator ups post-spill demands on Enbridge
Adding to Enbridge Inc.’s (TSX:ENB) regulatory troubles, the Northern Gateway proponent is facing new safety-enhancement demands from a U.S. regulator following the company’s recent Wisconsin oil spill.
The U.S. Department of Transportation’s Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration (PHMSA) has announced new requirements, including a third party to oversee a plan to improve the company’s safety record.

Goldcorp appoints George Burns COO
Vancouver-based Goldcorp Inc. (TSX:G) has appointed George Burns executive vice-president and COO, the company announced August 8. He replaces Steve Reid, who, according to Goldcorp, has left to pursue other interests. Burns has held management roles at Goldcorp for five years. As senior vice-president of the company’s Mexican operations, he oversaw development of Goldcorp’s flagship Peńasquito project and the expansion of the large Los Filos mine. Western Wind fights back in proxy battle
In its battle to prevent dissident shareholders from creating a new board, Vancouver’s Western Wind Energy Corp. (TSX:WND) announced August 7 that it has received numerous proposals from M&A advisory firms to broker a sale.
According to Western Wind, the largest of the firms anticipate an average 18-week timeline from beginning of engagement to final sale.
The company has been battling shareholders represented by investment manager Savitr Capital LLC from creating a dissident board after the July 29 sale announcement.Mining
Feds fund $10m for aboriginal mine training
After being on the brink of closure in June, the BC Aboriginal Mine Training Association (BCAMTA) has secured $10 million from the federal funding to keep its operations going for a further three years.
“As mineral explorers and developers, we are jubilant,” Gavin Dirom, president and CEO of the Association for Mineral Exploration BC, said in a press release.
The BCAMTA announced its woes in June. In early July, a notice on its website stated that the association was “back in business,” with funding details to come.Energy
Blackbird Energy signs LOI to acquire Ruger
Vancouver-based Blackbird Energy Inc. (TSX-V:BBI) announced August 7 that it has entered into a non-binding letter of intent (LOI) to acquire Albertan junior oil and gas explorer Ruger Energy Inc.
According to Blackbird, Ruger has a working interest in 680 acres in the Alsask area on the Alberta and Saskatchewan border along with three producing Mannville oil wells and a Glauconite water disposal well.
Under the LOI, Blackbird would acquire Ruger by issuing shares of its capital stock at a per-share price of $0.12, subject to conditions.
