Rioters in Mozambique have destroyed a mine owned by Vancouver-based Pacific Wildcat Resources.

The company says its Muiane mine was attacked and destroyed by what they describe as “local rioters” in the northern part of the African nation.

“Security staff on site have been injured and from first reports the site camp and equipment have been destroyed by fire,” the company said in a press release posted to its website Friday (November 13).

Pacific Wildcat said police are not allowing its local representatives into the mine site due to concerns “bandits” were still in the area.

The company did not immediately respond to interview requests from Business in Vancouver.

Pacific Wildcat acquired the project in 2009 to mine tantalum, a mineral used in the manufacturing of phones, computers and video games system.

The mine is about 2,000 kilometres from capital city Maputo and local representatives have since relocated to Nampula, about 120 kilometres south of the mine.
